There's a fruit called acai berry that's been in the news lately for its health benefits, and because Oprah likes it. The acai berry comes from a plant called the acai palm, from which we get hearts of palm, which you may have eaten in an expensive salad.
The berry from the tree is even more rare: a small, round, black-purple fruit that is reputed to have a number of health benefits -- including weight loss, learning and memory retention, and increased energy.
Hold a contest for ZUG readers to invent the world's best Acai Berry Energy Drink.
We offered a $250.00 prize to the recipe that scored the highest on three criteria: 1) Health benefits. We allowed any fruits, vegetables, or supplements, as long as they could be easily found at a grocery or health food store. We wanted a drink that anyone could easily make at home. 2) Taste. We broke out the blender in the ZUG test kitchen, where our panel of three judges tried each recipe, rating them in terms of drinkability and lack of gag factor. We wanted a drink that tasted good. 3) Funny name. All recipes also needed to come with a funny name, preferably including the word "acai" (pronounced "asa-EE"). Hey, we're a comedy site. From the delicious to the demonic, here's what we tasted. |
