Yowza. That's right, Audrey has spawned. I'm having a kid. I think it's pretty safe to say that my lide can't get any weirder than this.

Flame away.

To expand on my original point, those of you who somewhat know me also know that I've wanted a child for quite some time so this is a good thing. For the naysayers, I also have the support of the dad. And, yes, I know who the dad is. I guess this explains why my weight loss plan didn't work.

Flaming is not making me feel better. I'm actually quite sick that anyone can be this stupid.

Let's see.. acouple of weeks ago you were alone with two guys. You were obviously available enough to think perhaps they wanted to have sex with you.

Now you're pregnant with a third guy's baby and you plan on marrying him?

Enjoy a lifetime of trying to track him down for child support payments, welfare checks, mopping floors for a living, living in Shakespeareholes, and basically living your life like an episode of Cops.

I wonder how soon your next one will come and if you'll marry that kid's father too?

Assuming you're not kidding, you are a stupid, stupid, girl.

I think in order to save everyone some time, I will cut and paste the 5000 words from the 3 posts Ford made in the thread where Red announced she was gonna have a litter.

To sum it up so you don't swallow your tongue, the wisdom of Ford:

-I don't know you, but you will be a bad parent.

-you weren't married first, the marrage will fail the child will suffer.

-you being pregnant can not be viewed as good news, I wish you ill will.

Saying "you never know how this will work out, maybe she'll be a good mother and the kid won't be knocked up at 14" is like saying "you never know, maybe I'll be able to smoke crack every day and still lead a productive life."

I guess it's technically possible and maybe some people have done it, but don't count on it.

Oh come on.

1. Children change people. Some people who seem like they would be "good" parents turn out to be awful parents, and vice versa. You cannot predict how good a parent someone will be.

2. This is a wanted child, which makes abortion and adoption silly options.

Right, maybe the kid will make her even more irresponsible.

>You cannot predict how good a parent someone will be.

True, but if the indicators point to "crappy" why chance it? I'd rather give the benefit of the doubt to the kid, not the mother.

>This is a wanted child, which makes abortion and adoption silly options.

The fact that it's wanted makes it even worse. The fact that someone so young, uneducated, and unmarried would want to have a kid just shows that the she has very poor decision making abilities. That makes keeping it a silly option, and adoption a very sensible one.

Hey guys? Being pregnant isnt' easy. It's not easy to raise a child either. I've done both, and out of wedlock, Mark and I aren't married and won't be for some time. If she's happy about it, and she says she is, than I'm happy for her. I don't think it's very fair to tell her she's going to be a welly (welfare case) and all that, because not all single mothers are. Look at Trae, she's raising her child herself.. So are a lot of m oms I know who can't do anything about it and are doing just the best they can. And theyr'e great mothers, you don't have to be married and wealthy to be a great parent.

Mel, I wish you all the very very best, having a kid is very tiresome and very exhausting, but it's also rewarding, especially the first time he/she looks you in the eyes and says "Mommy, I love you"... You'll never think of things the same way again. Alannah looks at me like nobody else does, I'm the only thing in the world to her and it's the most precious gift I have EVER gotten. Ever.

I don't think you should give her crap about this guys. She's having a baby, she's happy about it, I don't tihnk she's in high school, so be happy for her and cut the guilt trip. She's got enough ahead of her without your Shakespeare.

Squeamish, you need to shut the Frost up. Unless you have a kid, you don't know what the Frost you are talking about. And you don't. you never do. Ever. The only reason you're doing this bullShakespeare is because it's Mel. I don't care what the extenuating circumstances are, if she's happy she's happy.

So just shut up shut up shut up for Frost-ing once! I am SO sick of your constant negativity and insults that coming from you are just Frost-ing hypocricy. What if C came up to you and told you you were having a kid? Would you just say OK Honey, off to the clinic we go, that parasite is gone in seconds? Hmm? Or would you say, OK honey, you can carry it for nine months, grow attached, then give it away the second it's born?

Knowing you, you would.

And unless you've been through the heartache of an abortion, I wouldn't just lightly suggest that either.

Frost her happiness, I'm more concerned (and hope she is, too) about the baby's happiness.

>What if C came up to you and told you you were having a kid?

I'd be pissed because we haven't had sex since her last period.

>Would you just say OK Honey, off to the clinic we go, that parasite is gone in seconds?

I cannot imagine a single circumstance in which I would ever allow my child to be killed.

>Hmm? Or would you say, OK honey, you can carry it for nine months, grow attached, then give it away the second it's born?

If I thought that giving the baby away was the best thing for it, I wouldn't hesitate.

>Knowing you, you would.

I would hope so.

>And unless you've been through the heartache of an abortion, I wouldn't just lightly suggest that either.

I would never suggest that. In fact, I would do everything in my power to prevent any woman from doing that to my child.

>I still feel guilty every goddamned day.

You did a bad thing. You deserve to feel guilty.

>He/she'd be aobut 5 now. Do you want to go through life thinking that? Well? Think aobut it for a while.

Again, I would never suggest (or allow) my child to be killed, so I'm not sure why you're trying to convince me that it's bad.

Ok, here's how it went. I lived in Texas for a year, with a guy. I got pregnant, he made me get an abortion. (I'm not going into details, I just didn't have much choice, and at that point, I was.. more impressionable.. shut up)

FIVE YEARS LATER I begin dating the guy I dated in COLLEGE, we lived together for several months before I got pregnant, and I refused to get another abortion. By then I knew I'd made a terrible mistake, one which I still regret. But I have no way of knowing whether my life would be for the better or for the worse if I had kept the first one..

I also know I wouldn't trade Alannah for anything, I could have been heartless and just said Let's abort this one too.. I didn't.. I don't regret it. She is well cared for and very well loved, I stay home with her during the day and go to the store in the afternoons for 2 to 3 hours, and come home to put her to bed. She has everything she needs plus some..

My point in the first place was that there is no reason to go all off on Mel and tell her to get rid of it. I bet none of you ACTUALLY know her, so how do YOU know she'll end up on welfare with a crack baby? HMmm?

For all I know this is some joke and I've gotten all upset over nothing.. It's happened before.. It just means I've gotten too attached to Gab again.

I've sent your kid's pictures to NAMBLA

People who want babies so bad should ask themselves if they could find meaning in their own lives without having to make another person to validate their existence. If you can't, what are you doing? You're just making another person who'll be pointless until they can squirt out their own little bundle of validation. Am I the only one who sees the pointlessness in this? Break the cycle.

I have an older sister who had her first baby at 17 years of age. Before the baby was born she lacked many of the things you folks here take for granted; things such as intelligence, academic achievement & common sense, a sense of humour, et al. God bless her for the choices she's made - more power to her.

Despite these 'drawbacks' and the fact that these things have not changed, she is the best mother to children I know. She is loving, caring, exceptionally gifted in ensuring their safety, comfort, schooling, etc.

To the people who resort to quoting statistics, remember they are just that - statistics. Base numbers have no bearing on specific individuals.

Personally, I don't care whether Mel's up the duff or not. I just wanted to get my two bits in.

Here endeth the gospel according to St. Mike.

(P.S. Tomorrow I'm going for an allergy test to see if I am truly allergic to humour or not.)

My child leads a full happy life with 2 parents, and it will stay that way. She is lucky. I realize that can't always happen, but I don't immediately condemn someone because it can't.

SUT, I'm glad your neice is in the best of hands.

However, I firmly believe that for every great single-mother story like that there are ten not-so-wonderful.

I had a friend who decided to give her baby up for adoption at age 18. But when the baby was born she selfishly changed her mind.

That child will be sort-of okay, except that she saw boyfriend after boyfriend enter her mother's life (and even a loving husband that Mommy ditched after a month), and at the age of 9 Mommy decided she wanted to move again, and left her child behind to live with the grandparents -- for 3 years.

"I love Mommy. I know she loves me because she comes to visit every few weeks."

I've lost all respect for this woman, and grieve over the emotional damage she's done to her child. We are no longer friends, for this reason among others.

Again, I'm not coming out for or against welfare or similar programs. All I'm trying to say is call it what it is. It's charity. If the government gives you money because you can't feed the people you're suppose to feed it's involuntary charity on the part of every other taxpayer. Which I'm not saying is a good or bad thing.

'your reference of "indian" taxpayer indicated a judgement of the situation, as did your attacks upon SU(V).'

The term indian giver is insulting to the idea that SUTard's sister is not actually recieving charity but receiving money that she earned by being a taxpayer.

Personal attacks on SUTard have to do with him being a moron, not with welfare.

If there's any Social Security left when we get old, Scooter, I hope you respectfully decline it because (even though you'll eventually contribute to it when you have a job) you'll be taking other people's tax dollars.

That argument applies even more to SS, since you won't ever see any of the taxes you've actually paid in.

Or perhaps you could lobby the government to have your own private tax-dollar fund set up because you don't like other people using your tax dollars, like the military, the post office, and your local school.

Maybe you would like to pay at point-of-use for every day your kids go to school, because some other parents are sending their kids to school too, and by doing that they're using your tax dollars, dammit!

(And no, you can't say "they're paying taxes too" because you've just said it up there: if you use that argument, they're "Indian taxpayers.")

I got news for you, bub: we're all Indian taxpayers. What do you think taxes are for?

If you don't like certain social services, you have the right to vote against them. Until they're abolished, though, anyone who qualifies for them has the right to use them.

My main point, though is this:

Your statement below is a sham. Most people, in fact EVERYONE, who pays taxes DOES in fact ask for it back. We ask for it back in the form of good roads, a good military, good schools, etc. Some people have a more immediate need to get it back in a liquid form. In any case, we ALL get it back.

And most people don't get to say "hey you know those taxes I payed, I actually need that back". She's an indian taxpayer. What's the point of paying the government for the money it gives you? "That hundred bucks wasn't a handout! I payed 20 bucks for it!"

I think providing for your kid without the help of the government is superior to providing for your kid with the help of the government. Finance is only one of many reasons why a child is better off being given to adoptive parents who want children and are prepared in all capacities to raise them.

If you had no problem with welfare, you wouldn't have made comments about the state or the government.

If your concern was actually the child itself, rather than the tax dollars, your argument would have been different.

Poverty is bad for kids because there are factors like neglect, a lack of education, and a lack of "wantedness" that tend to go hand in hand with it.

Simply having parents who are poor isn't necessarily bad for a child if they're wanted, they're cared for, and they're loved.

Besides, and I cannot stress this enough:

NOT ALL SINGLE MOTHERS GO ON WELFARE!!!

I don't think anybody has no problem at all with welfare. But it has nothing to do with what I said. All I argued about is whether or not a person getting welfare is paying for welfare with their hard earned money.

I argued about what people chose to argue with me about. I think it's selfish for a woman who get's knocked up in a poor position to raise a child to keep the child rather than give it up to one of the many couples who would love to have a child and are in a better position to provide it with everything. Nobody chose to debate with me about that. In fact the only thing anybody seems to want to debate with me about is what my opinion actually is. Silly me I thought I knew what my own opinions were.

Scooter: in my sister's case, she has been paying taxes (and CONTINUES to pay taxes) longer than you have been alive. What she gets from this housing allowance (which is NOT welfare, incidentally) is miniscule as a proportion of her contributions. She does of course benefit from communal services and programs like everyone else - even those who don't even pay taxes.

If she had made absolutely no contributions to the tax base, some aspects of your argument might hold water.

According to your argument, another example might be: if I was working and paying into an Employment Insurance fund, if I were to become unemployed, I have no right to monies from that fund. 99% of reasonable people would rightly think you were insane if you took that approach.

Well, I think it's selfish for married man/woman couples to have/adopt children and then provide them with everything, thus keeping them ignorant about the value of money and the satisfaction of doing a difficult job well, and generally hiding them from anything in life that might be "hard" or "out of the ordinary."

The kids grow up selfish, intolerant, and jaded, and those sorts of people end up spawning their own kind, you know.

"one of the many couples who would love to have a child and are in a better position to provide it with everything" is no different from a single mother like Mel, except (1) they're a couple and (2) they have more money to "provide it with everything," and as we've seen, money is not the be-all-and-end-all.

Perhaps the issue is "couple." Ok, fine, Mel said she would get married before the child was born. But then everyone ragged on her for that. She can't win.

people who pay for insurance gamble that they will be the ones who end up needing it. The people who don't need it end up paying for it for the people who do. That's the nature of insurance. Everybody who buys insurance knows that going in.

Taxes are not the same as insurance. Taxes go to pay for our government and the services it provides. One of those is welfare and similar programs. If you are actually a person on welfare or something similar and you payed taxes before I think it's wrong to think that you're not being helped by anyone. The money you get whether it's less or more than the amount that you payed in is money that would have otherwise gone to something that hopefully would have benefited everyone, not just you. I'm not saying you're a piece of crap or anyhting for accepting it, I'm just saying don't get an attitude like you earned it or something. A little "hey, thank you fellow taxpayers for helping out like this" wouldn't be out of line.

A couple is better than a single. A couple that actually loves each other and has prospects of staying together is better. A couple that has been married for several years. A couple that has been together long enough to decide together that they'd really like to have a child together is better than a couple who Frosted, got pregnant and got married because the girl got pregnant.

Nope. You can't make that generalization at all. As I've stated repeatedly, YOU CANNOT TELL WHO WILL BE A GOOD PARENT.

You can't judge it on relationship status or past knowledge of the person. You can't judge it on whether the child was planned or not.

Why? Because having a child changes people. A couple who is married and stable, but have previously been living only with each other, can be torn apart by a child.

A single mother (or father) who wasn't expecting parenthood, on the other hand, can suddenly realize the destructive behaviors in his/her life, and out of the experience of becoming a parent, can become one of the best parents on the planet.

Or it could all go the other way. The point is, you can never tell ahead of time who will make a good parent. No, you can't. You can't. No, not even you. No, you can't.

Best thread ever.

A few points: It is true, some single mothers are great and do not go on welfare. I've met Meg and I can't think of someone who would be a better mother.

We're talking about Shelby though. Under the circumstances this kid was concieved (and admittedly, I don't know what they are but I do know the circumstances under which he was NOT concieved) I think it's safe to say that this is not a good situation for this child. Love and $1.25 will buy you a cup of coffee.

AmyPoo, this "dick" of an ex-husband that you blame your welfare on is the same guy you choose to have sex with, right? Just checking.

If a baby is what Shelby needs to become a responsible human being then so be it. If somehow she gets the financial support to give this child what he needs, great. I will come back and apoligize and even contribute to a college fund.

She choose to post this on Gab so she opened herself up for comments.

OK, here goes.

I skimmed through this thread.

1) Some shotgun weddings do work. Some don't. The only reliable indicator I know of is this: people who live together before marriage have a much HIGHER divorce rate than those who don't. Which is counter-intuitive, to say the least.

2) Mel may be preggers out of wedlock, but at least she's past 25. Some of you evidently think she's dumb; even if she is, she's going to be a better parent than she would have been ten years ago.

Everyone who assumes this kid is going to be a waste, allow me to present a case study:

Child's father is an abusive alcholic. Child's mother has venereal disease. Child has many siblings and they live in poverty.

Think child has a chance?

In at least one case, child=Ludvig Von Beethoven.

In a lot of other cases, child=no one in particular.

The point being, human beings are endlessly surprising.

You ever notice how Scooter, when cornered, says things like "people telling me what I think just never gets old"?

Scooter, nobody tells us what Scooter thinks except for Scooter. The words that one writes down, combined together and taken as a whole, are meant represent the thoughts of the person writing them.

If you find that your meaning is often misconstrued, you might want to reconsider how you write your words.

Why do you guys even bother to hash out the fine points. This is someone who insists her car crashes itself. Have you ever seen a more pugnaciously and obstinately irresponsible person on Gab? Do you think she's ever going to think more than 24 hours in the future? Or own the consequences when she doesn't?

This is so predictable it's practically fate. This is how we fill trailer parks folks. You already know the rest of the story. Next comes either no marriage or divorce shortly thereafter, and Mel will make sure she gets her child support and she'll go on WIC, she'll never have to work again till the kid is grown, and she can put all the responsibility for it on somebody else. The fact is the system is set up so that getting pregnant by the right guy is a low-ambition solution to all your problems. Have a baby and there is a lower threshold for how bad it can get or how responsible you have to be. Have one and you get free money, and you get even more if you can identify the father. Does this sound at all out of character for what you've read here over the last couple years? You know it describes her to a tee.

Maybe the father will stick around

All of life is a "maybe." Nothing is certain.

The key is finding out what is likely to work and what is not.

Mel can keep her baby, you can't say for sure the kid won't end up on smack and knocked up at 14.

Just like I could go and spend my entire paycheck on lottery tickets. You can't say for sure I won't win.

With hindsight, you can always look back and see if something was a good decision. That's not hard. Lottery tickets a re a bad idea. Sure, for the 1 guy out of the 100,000,000 that wins you can say t was a good idea, but for the other 99,999,999 people they should hav spent their $1 elsewhere.

Same goes for the baby situation. I'm sure you can find single-mother success stories, but the fact that such an overwhelming majority of them fail miserably makes it hard to justify keeping it and calling it anything other than selfish.

I am late, as usual.

I will not sit here and say that she's going to be a bad mother. I have a cousin who was really messed up on drugs for a long time, and when she found out she was pregnant she cleaned up her act, got all her legal problems cleaned up (from the drug arrests) and is now in a good job, drug free, and loves her son very much. I would have been the first to say that she shouldn't have a child. Now I am very proud of her for cleaning up her act.

I don't know the nature of the relationship with the father, other than they had at least one night of sweaty passion. I just hope that before you marry him, you will know whether he's going to be a good husband and father. Any clown can give child support to his spawn, but only a good man can be a dad.

Squeam, I am for adoption when it's needed, but who is the judge here? It seems to me that any time anyone gets pregnant and doesn't think the same way you do, you scream for adoption. I wouldn't be surprised if you wanted everyone, married or not, to give their own child to someone else and then adopt one for themselves.
