A comedy conversation by Alienyst 2,371 12

are you really like?

This came up in a conversation with another Gabber and she suggested it would be a good topic....

So what's the mix? Honestly.....or not...

some personality traits get amplified here, and some diminished. a lot of people tend to overcompensate for perceived inadequacies in this rather impersonal type of forum. when i reread old threads, i sometimes wonder why i said the things i did. occasionally i can pinpoint my thoughts, and the process has the potential to be rather revealing.

quite a lot of the time, though, i am simply in character, as are many of you. whatever air of mystery we have managed to create needs some wonderment to keep it alive. none of us would be much fun if in real life we were exactly what we portray ourselves to be here. and this website would have died off years ago if there were nothing here but our pale beige little day-to-day personalities populating all this bandwidth.

we all have beige moments, candie. if we didn't, the world would be a streetcar jam packed with hundreds of fourteen year old schoolgirls, each and every one exclaiming how very important this moment is to the entire universe, perpetually.

beige helps us get by, and get along. "how are you?" "fine, thanks." -- that's beige.

I was playing Trivial Pursuit once when I was about 22 and the question was "How long does it take the average person to fall asleep?"

I guessed three hours.

The correct answer was about 20 minutes.

It was at that moment I began to wonder if I had been misled all my life.

Translation: My personality is maleable, I can blend into just about any social group. I credit a pretty well-developed sense of empathy with an encyclopediac knowledge of minutia. I can modulate aspects of my personality to make others comfortable.

As a consequence, few people really know me. And I like it that way. On GAB I publicly interact with many different people. So I end up being a more complete version of myself than most individuals get.

Translation: My personality is maleable, I can blend into just about any social group. I credit a pretty well-developed sense of empathy with an encyclopediac knowledge of minutia. I can modulate aspects of my personality to make others comfortable."

That's very astute, Dork. I think you just described me, as well. For years and years I made it my top priority to learn how to blend in with any group I was around, to the point where I resented people who didn't try to blend in because I felt like they were being lazy.

Lately, though, I've been working on not doing the auto-blend thing, mostly by thinking carefully over what I say or do before saying or doing it to make sure that it's actually me. It's been an interesting experiment, and I find that I make friends with more interesting people now. The empathetic side of me is still there, though, and it usually kicks in when I hear people say unkind things about this or that group of people. And I'm glad it does.

Conclusion: One shouldn't try to blend in on purpose too often, and one shouldn't try not to blend in on purpose too often, either. Or something.

My online persona (Mookie, STiD) is a character, a reflection of who I would be if there was not such a social stigma for saying the things you really want to. How many times have you been waiting in the ten items or less line and wanted to say to the guy with 25 items, "Hey mother-Froster! Can't you count?" As such many personality traits are amplified, most recognizabe are those that are considered socially abrasive. Here on GAB I'm ten times as likely to say your "full of Shakespeare" than I am in real life, and likewise more apt to compliment someone I feel deserves it. Without a physical form, other than a few pictures that we quickly forget about while posting, we are more likely to base our image of a person on their personality and contents of their posts that be biased by their looks.

Except for Candie, I wouldn't kick her out of bed.

As sad as it is to admit it, I have found that GAB is the only place where I can be myself, other than the place I work at, where they call me God Bartender and Jesus on Sundays.

I can think of more one liners and zingers while here than I do all day sleeping.

My personna here is mostly what I am. Loving, giving and a smartass.

I do want you people to know that, even whilst my mouth runs away from me, I still hate the lot of you deep in the bottom of my heart.

We get along swimmingly, we never raise our voices at each other, we're very different yet find each other fascinating, and we're both looking forward to being great parents.

I'd have to go with Gavia's statement of "I'm much funnier in person."

I'm not sure I could define my Gab personna, except to say I don't have much of one. Hmmm, I often post late to threads, I think I have the itchiest nipples of anyone here, and lately more people have started actually talking to me. Woo! Three years on Gab and people occasionally acknowledge my presence.

I'm quieter in real life (if you can believe that's possible). And I have lots of dirty socks in my desk at work. My feet get hot easily.

In real life, if I don't know you, or I'm not quite comfortable around you, I clam up. I don't talk, except to apologize profusely for stuff that isn't my fault. I kinda hunch my shoulders up and smile timidly, speaking in a meek, soft voice. However, once I become friends with someone, I'm louder, and almost like this, except without the constant innuendos. Oh, and I really am intelligent. I do say, "like" a bit too much, but besides that, I am capable of holding intelligent conversations.

I try to be funny here AND in "real life", but here you can't hear me laughing after each thing I say, the laugh that pleads "please think I'm funny..."

I suppose the main difference is that here I don't worry that I should maybe watch my tongue lest I say something innapropriate.

It's hard...I'm not Gene Simmons you know.
