GAB 3.5
A comedy conversation

Although GAB 4.0 is still several months off, tonight we go live with what we'll call GAB 3.5. A quick rundown of what's new:
- We have created a new "About GAB" page which incorporates many of the GAB values that you guys identified in a recent conversation called "Newbie Survival Guide." Please read it carefully.
- We have removed pictures from personal profiles. Several people were using this feature to post pornographic photos, and of course that's not what we originally intended.
- There is also a "report abuse" button on each personal profile, which will eventually be expanded (right now it's just a link to my e-mail). Many of you e-mail me when you feel that someone has crossed over the line; this will allow us to keep formal track of those complaints. We are not planning to moderate any more heavily than before.
- We have turned off the feature to turn off the Swearbot. In the early days, we tolerated a certain amount of swearing, but we had far fewer users back then. Many of the problems of "tone" I mentioned a few weeks ago, I believe, are due to our decision to make the Swearbot optional when we started GAB 3.0 last year. On the bright side, we will soon give you more choices of new Swearbot themes (a common request).
- We are now displaying IP addresses with each post. They are slightly encrypted to protect your privacy, but will give the board some measure of accountability.

- We have added a new "Who's On GAB" feature, which will show you everyone who's posted in the last 15 minutes.
- We have created a new version of GAB At Work, in response to the many requests we received to do a better text-only version of the site. This code was generously shared with us by Tim (thank you, Tim).
- Finally, speaking of the early days, we've created a new feature on the beginning of GAB, which we hope you'll enjoy.
The reason for these changes is simple: GAB has grown enormously. Last month was our biggest month yet, with 850,000 pageviews. We have put a lot of thought into these changes, and believe they will make GAB a better place for the community to grow.
I'm going to bed. Hopefully the code won't fall apart before morning.

So let me get this straight. You encourage free speech but won't let us swear. you won't kick anyone for what they say but you have a "tattle tale" button in profiles. You want gab to grow but enforce the elitism of gab with an assnine rating system.
someone is getting a flaming bag on their door step.

I think John misses the point of swearing. You see I lived and breathed the mean streets of Burlington and Medford. Its how we speak yo! Would you tell Irvine Welsh that he can't write phonetically. Would you stop Snoop Dogg from saying biotch? Would Jay-Z be allowed to say "H is for the izza".
You are racist Mr Hargrave.

Take a look outside. See that? Revolution is just beneath the surface! If that happens, everything we stand for will be DESTROYED -- unless the German officer corps stands like a rock, intact! And what is more important, untarnished. I made this Stachel into a national hero for good military reasons. If I court-martial him now, it will reflect on the integrity of the whole officer corps.
That is more relavent today then ever before.

John, the idea of destroying the 'off' feature of the swearbot was a terrible idea. I find the swearbot to be extremely buggy, and it is placing a limit on the free speech of the place.
I am probably speaking on behalf of the majority of GAB users when I say that you should still be able to turn off the swearbot.

- We are now displaying IP addresses with each post. They are slightly encrypted to protect your privacy, but will give the board some measure of accountability.
I give Squeamish 10 minutes before he figures out the ROT13 "encryption" and begins stalking people.

I don't think he's killing it. He's just changing it. Everyone's still able to post. Everyone's still able to rant up a storm.
John put a swearbot in because the right to swear was abused, plain and simple. You wouldn't need a swearbot if people didn't work through their Tourette's symptoms on a regular basis in a public forum.

i disagree sleestack.
swearing is a huge part of communicating in every language and culture. like most slang, swear words are a part of language that changes the most rapidly and frequently. the swear words of yesterday are tomorrow's dead words or, alternately, catchphrases. this is not due to the desensitizing of our society, either. this is part of the process whereby languages change and evolve.
outlawing swearing will not make anyone more polite. it will just alienate people.

He's trying to change what he perceives to be a negative behavior. The exact words filtered don't really matter. Try hard enough, and I'm sure they'll be all kinds of clever little things that can be done to abuse the swearbot.
I think John is saying, "Enough, folks. It wears on you after a while, okay? Try and be a little more like a community, fer cryin' out loud."

I read about half the thread before I got irked. People who cannot tolerate certain words being used in their presence should have their throat removed forcefully with something sharp and jagged, so if they survive, they can revert to childish primate communication of grunting and whining. This is beyond stupid. I've threatened to leave about a dozen times, and I usually tend to pull it off for stretches at a time, but everything's seemed stagnant lately, and I've been lurking off and on, and you pull this shyt? Fvck, man, give people options at least, and take them away if they abuse them. Of course, in the defense of freedom and equality and all, who, exactly, the fvck are you to decide what's right and wrong? Won't be long before we're allowed to remove each others posts from our threads like little guestbooks on geocities pages. This is retarded. Until Cube, Declan, Or Vlad contact me with info on improvements, I'm gone. So much for improving the board, Hargrave, when you cater to the lowest common denominator, you get the worst possible product. Heard of Darwin, go fvcking read about natural selection, and get back to me when you actually understand it.

But I also choose not to swear too much here because, A. It's not necessary, and B. I consider it to be a vulgar way to make a point, when there's this wonderful thesaurus thingee that allows me to be more eloquent.
Stuby has launched ego-withering attacks without a swear in the post. I thought that rather ingenious and spoke well of Stuby's ability to get his point across.

To bo honest, I disagree with it too, but I think I can understand the mindset.
I don't think it was about protecting anyone. Look, he's made it clear several times that he was disturbed by the viciousness that he saw growing on the board. He watched newbies get torn to pieces by a lot of dismissive people who just write their unrepentant criticism off to "Hey, that's GAB. Deal." And he didn't like what he saw anymore.
This isn't really a change. I think it's a warning shot.
I'm just guessing, of course.

Holy craparooney. That's right. ALL of the posts have the IP stamp.
Okay, now THERE'S a legit complaint. Since there's now a way to determine and every single poster on the board since GAB started up again, posts made before today should NOT show the IP, because we were still operating with the presumption of anonyminity.

Kinda sad if this is all a bad joke, but hargrave's posts to the board never invlove comedy, he tries to keep us all at arms length from his humor. Not a bad idea, overexposure dulls everything, so its not a bad move on his part, but still, I doubt this is a joke. I wouldn't mind the IP thing, being able to keep up with all the anon posts and Shakespeare.

I have VERY mixed feelings about these changes.
I understand that GAB is part of a legacy that John has worked hard to create. He has every right to want to mold and shape it as he wishes, in the hopes of bringing together the community he imagined (regardless of whether it truly exists or not.) Yeah, we have each, in our own little way, helped GAB grow by coming here. And, it's a part of us, we're a part of it, blah, blah, blah. But it's not ours. It's John's.
It would be great if everyone followed the "commandments" set forth in the "About" page. They make perfect sense to me, and so I can see the logic in John's head as he implements these changes. But the truth is, it's not to everyone's style. Now, maybe the people to whose style it's not shouldn't be posting here. But the overriding factor here is funny. And funny is incredibly subjective. Some people who get clickies all the time are people I don't find particularly humorous, and vise versa. We've all seen it. But that diversity is a beauty of GAB - and to seek such diversity and then, upon getting it, say, "Well... I don't quite like this about it..." kind of leaves a sour taste our mouths. You wanted it, and you got it. "Cosmic, astonomical powers, eeety beety living space." Nothing about human nature is perfect. No matter how hard you try to make it.
Do I like it when people here are mean to me? No. Do I take it personally? Not really. Anyone who is stupid enough to be truly hurt by someone's insult or thoughtless remark, someone they don't know who is hundreds or thousands of miles away, deserves to have their feelings hurt. This isn't to say I condone mean-spiritedness intended for that purpose. I think we would all do well to be nicer to one another. Online and in the real world. But I found out a long time ago, it don't work that way.

That said, I would like to propose a compromise, though I have no idea whatsoever how possible it is (money/time-wise): TWO GABs. GAB, and GAB lite. GAB remains as it is now. GAB lite would essentially be a mirror site to GAB, but as clean as John wants it to be. No swears, no flames. It might have to be moderated, in the sense that there would have to be some feature for filtering out the meanness, leaving only the "funny-intelligent." So GAB would contain all that GAB lite has, but GAB lite does not necassarily have everything that GAB does. People have the option of entering either one, but they enter GAB(regular) with full understanding that it is unmoderated, and therefore there will be swearing, pics, and stuff all over they may not like. They also realize they may be flamed for life. If they can't handle it, boo-effin-hoo. Newbies are thusly warned, and the rest of us know better. But I think, resources permitting, this could possibly make (almost) everyone happy.
Yes? No? Dumbest. Idea. Ever.?

You know who I am. Just thought I'd mention the IP thing is now effective on all past-date threads. Go back to all the controversial threads and see who all the fvcking obnoxious anonymous posts were. Why wait for someone to post. Pull up that old thread and find out now if moon really was kenshin. Go on now, kiddies, ruin all the mystery that is half the joy of gab's atmosphere. The humor is now dependant on someone else's opinion, the language moderated, the mystery killed. GAB was a great forum, and will always likely be a great place, nice layout, and usage, and all, but I only ascribe to total freedom. I don't make a habit of anon posts, or any other identities or anything, I have 1 account, it's all I need. Nobody takes me seriously as it is, why do I need a second account? But despite all that, the IP thing is plain out stupid, and what level of privacy from most people that we've been able to retain here is one of it's more charming traits. Even if this is some sorta prank, it's a bad one, in poor taste, fvcking with something a lot of people rely on to a certain extent. Anyway, have fun john, since you just lost probably half of your beloved fanbase.

Huzzah to Candie and Sleestack re: IPs.
Imps are a critical component of GAB
* They give us an instrument for chastising non-normative behavior without it escallating into a personal issue.
* They allow folks to contribute interesting things to conversations that they might normally find embarassing.
* Imps are a fun way to introduce grist to the GAB mill. I don't want to know who Vlad and Sperel are or who decides to channel William Shatner for a day.
Keep the IP data for the administrator, but please keep it away from the users.

I've already determined that a script can be written that polls all the messages of the board, extracts the IP number and poster, and put them all in a database for dissection and comparison. It would take me a few hours to write it.
This is NOT good.

Is it me, or has this been a great 2 hours of GAB? I've laughed my buns off and I have seen more intelligent, passionate debate than I have seen in the average week. And the tension of the possible revelation of every controversial imp over the past year just makes me tingle.
I like seeing this sort of debate. It reminds me of the early years of the United States, when there were new frontiers and passionate debate about foundational issues. Any community without controversy is dead.

I remember when I first started Gabbing, I thought it was the greatest thing ever. We had cool little icons, it was a pretty, clean setup, there was a photo album, people communicated off the board, and all that sort of stuff. I was amazed. At my old board, a kid gave out his email address asking for a friend, and got, like, 150 posts. It was considered so innovative, but here it's standard. Therefore I appreciate the Swearbot. I think it's funny and different. But the rest of this stuff is changing Gab from this funky, different, unique corner of the interweb to just another messageboard.
And now the suggestions:
John, please try to accept the fact that people can be mean and vulgar. That's just the way we are. Also, if you're trying to get more people to visit your site by making it more friendly to noobs, you're going to fail. You're driving away several members of the established audience to cater to a few newbies who might just spout "OMG, asl ppl, dont yall think Justin Timberlake is a total FOX?!?" one or two times then leave.
Everyone else, please try to realize how special Gab is, even with a few modifications-- not including, of course, the ones that change what Gab is really about.
Final point: It's not really about whether or not you can swear-- it's about who you're swearing at. Even though the setup does contribute in its own way to Gab's uniqueness, it can only go so far. The people are what keep others coming back. As long as we still have all our special personalities, we'll be okay. It's just really too bad that they might end up being censored.

In short: I'm still going to say whatever the hell manages to ooze out of my brain. Cursing is fun, about one of the only things that gives me joy in this world. You ever let out a string of swear words in front of a small child? It has to be one of the most satisfying things ever. I'm not going to complain none, but this watered-down Shakespeare is just jading people's attitude toward you, John. Good luck finding the middle ground.

Well I get into work and all hell has broken loose whilst I was asleep. It's not fair. Gab should be delayed so we all get it at the same time!
If John makes this board too easy and friendly to use then it will quickly become flooded and it will become impossible to retain any sense of who everybody is.
I lurked on this board for about 2 years before I plucked up the courage to actually register.

At first read, I was not really sure how I would feel. BUT - the swearbot thing is a Frost-ing stupid move. It is not going to make us stop swearing, just that those of us whom it doesn't necesarily bother or would rather reat the thread as the poster intended are now treated like the immature Emersons who turn it off then then complain about it.
IP's, although slightly encrypted? Why put them at all then? Encrypted ones only make people like me (and I am sure many others here) just find a way to decrypt them.
Abuse button? Are we in kindergarten? Part of the reason Gab works now is the fact that if we have a problem with anyone, we tell them. Or we ignore them. Or better yet, engage in some witty, humorous banter with them.
It doesn't matter if the community has grown. If it has, it has because of what it was, not what you have just made it.

I think I can answer that last question.
First of all, the last thing a board operator wants to do is be put into a position where they have to approve stuff. You'll always get accusations of censorship, double-standards and favoritism no matter how careful you are. And besides, a board operator has better things to do than wade through gif images all day.

850,000 page views? A lot of thsoe are reloads so you see the latest posts in threads and also, that is 850,000 page views as it WAS not as what you have just changed it to!

Whoo you people are touchy. Reminds me why I hate changing things on my own site.
Though I don't know why John doesn't have the swearbot work at read time, rather than post time. Having an option for that would protect delicate constitutions, and uphold the First Amendment rights some of you seem to think you have on someone else's publishing system. Everyone happy.
Unless it /is/ done at readtime, in which case, I don't know what the point of perma-on is, either.

As for the swearbot, I thought it was better left as an option. Making it mandatory only means that those who are unoffended by profanity are instead offended by pasta or poets. It doesn't keep people from swearing, it keeps people from reading swearing.

For the most part I don't think any of these changes are that big a deal. The "encryption" on the IPs might be a little better. I like the idea of being accountable for imp posts while still being able to do it. I've always felt certain imp jobs are what makes this place.
I tend to support John because, like Spinn said, this is *his* home and we're only guests. All this crap about freedom of speech and "oh great, John, now you've gone and Frosted it up... I hope you're happy" is just a matter of missing the point.
The one thing I take issue to, which has been mentioned, is the posting of IPs on old posts. We were posting thinking our IPs would not be posted. I'm not a lawyer, and I've never read Zug's privacy policy (do they have one?) so I don't imagine any case would hold up in court (nor do I feel strongly enough about the issue to look into it) but I think, as a show of good will, John should take steps to remedy this issue. All it would take is an "IF date < 4/15/2002 then ShowIP = NO" type check.
Keep improving Gab. People tend to be afraid of change but they quickly get used to it. Frost 'em.

John, while you are getting your business degree plan on taking a marketing class or three.
I've already posted about how your revenue model is not aligned with the site. But now you've broken a cardinal marketing law for about the third time in the last 6 months: Never Frost with your installed base.
You will never cross the chasm to mainstream success without a fanatically loyal core group of customers. And if you alienate them, you are sunk.
You had the ultimate market research tool at your fingertips and you didn't use it. You can learn how folks will react to proposed changes before you blow money on code. You still have the right to ignore the findings of your research, but you won't have any surprises.
You can to run GAB as a social experiment. Allow the system to show the impact of feature changes. But if you want to build a successful venture, you better use a Shakespeareload more rigor in your methods.

Holy Shakespeare, i don't post for two days and look what happens!!
Well, for the swearbot, who cares. It doesn't make a difference either way, so let John have it. We owe him so much more than that.
IP's...I'm torn. I really don't want to know who Vlad is, nor will i try to, but i'm sure it is now inevitable that i find out. Hopefully, sperel was never anyone else for you to find, other than a master lurking poop eating goose. But it's your show John. You kill a grand venue on your site in imping and anonymity. Would this have ever been posted otherwise? Probably, but maybe not.
So, do what you will, john. I support you either way, since you've already given us all so much.
But as time progresses more and more through yet another version of Gab, I continually ask myself, how long before John has sold out. I truly hope you find in Gab's mainstreamed crowd the money to better provide for your family, since so many of your friends here will simply never understand.
weeps

We're very sorry. We'll cut down on how many pageviews we pageview.
If last month was so busy, why change it, knowing you'll upset 847,382 of those pageviewers?
Bah.
Bah and feh, I say.

June 1998: The first major troublemaker: an anonymous user writes an automated program which creates new conversations at a rate of one per minute, all of which contain the word "Frost," "Ogden Nash," and other witty aphorisms. We are forced to consider moderating or censoring GAB -- and for the first and only time, we break the anonymity of GAB and post his IP address.

I've seen Former Gabber lurking once in a while, and posting the occasional piece of crap. It boggles the mind to think how much of a loser you'd have to be to keep haunting a website you claim not to like. I envision a greasy, fat, balding little troll hunched in front of his computer, taking the odd break from EverQuest just long enough to post about how much he hates Gab now, and to bid on EverQuest items on Ebay.
