Me and My Mac
A comedy article

I went and set up my Mac today.
Yes, I own a Mac now. In my life's quest to become Das FreshMacher UberGeek, I have to acknowledge the existence other weak and feeble operating systems, even Microsoft. But for years there was one popular OS I would never touch: MacOS.
My previous hatred of the MacOS began many years ago when a Mac Classic crashed heartily when accessing a network, and when it rebooted it gave me a little icon with a sad face.

A sad face? Oh, come ON... Millions of dollars in development and testing, and all Apple would show the end user for all that was a SAD FACE? Where was the debug output? Where was the amazingly delightful obscure esoteria upon which geeks like myself fed their souls? I wanted to see something like...
WARNING: Program Halt in Execute Process X:233 Widget WuggaWugga Module v32.144c. You must enter Debug Mode with C:800 emulation to correct problem, or contact customer support so we can mock you and call you a weenie.
But no. A sad face. You've got to be kidding me. It was insulting to geek computer users everywhere. It basically told you that you WEREN'T SMART ENOUGH to look directly at the error code.
Happy Computer Thingee faw down, go boom. Bad things happened. Look at the hand puppet! LOOK AT THE PUPPET! Shiny things!
Bah. And so I dismissed the Mac platform for many years. And then, of course, the company went into the crapper. Then Mac hired back Steve "I tripped on acid a LOT on company time" Jobs, who giggled a lot, smiled his electric smile, put out a blueberry fishbowl and called it an iMAC.
And the latte-and-soulpatch crowd went wild.
"I must have it," they would yell, "for the color and style completes me as a person!"
"Um... Do you even know what programs it can run?" I would inquire.
"No matter! To turn the power on would disrupt its perfect aura!"
"I need you to go away now." I would say, then hit them with a broom.
And so I was happily Mac-free until one day when the Apple Board of Directors had a moment of sobriety and realized that their OS software was, in fact, poo-poo. So they swipped a copy of FreeBSD code, re-did the interface, and released it as MacOS X.
This meant that I was forced to re-assess my deep-seated hatred. No longer was MacOS a proprietary, hands-off system. It had a command line interface. It had emacs. For God's sake, it ran SSH. I could resist it no longer.
When I was in Portland, OR ("Land of The Happy Hippy") visiting onion, I purchased a used Mac G3 400 Blue and White and had it shipped home. And it's running here now. In fact, I composed this piece on it.
It's quite nice. The interface is smooth, the system is robust, the iTunes program is merrily streaming MP3 broadcasts, the DVD is playing, the network connections are connected, and I have no real complaints anymore. I'm a Mac user now (in addition to my beloved Linux, along with FreeBSD and Microsoft, of course), and I'm proud.
I have to admit that playing with the system was an eye-opening experience. Here I am yesterday...

... and here I am today...

Now I can funnel my energy into hating Microsoft full-time...

This was a special, Portland, OR-style Mac.
This meant that it went around bashing Intel machines in the kneecaps.

Welcome to the darkside, Sleestack. I was the same way. Tired of Windows and attracted by the geekyness of the OS X platform. Now I find myself running OS X at home as my main OS of choice (together with a Linux box, but OS X is it for me 99% of the time.)
You remind me of this guy.
Other testimonials.

Yesterday I dropped XDarwin and Fink on the puppy so I could grab and run The Gimp. Worked immediately. I'm just amazingly impressed.
What's interesting is reading some of the Mac forums. It seems that there's a real collision of software ideologies. Half the people are the Old Guard Mac developers who still believe that Proprietary and Costly is Better (TM, Pat. Pend.), against the new huge rush of FreeBSD OpenSource folk that think it should all be given away.
From what I'm reading, Apple "gets it" as far as the benefits of an Open Source model goes. We'll see. But I can definitely see a feasible future with Mac workstations and Linux servers.

Plus, of course, it's a Babe Magnet.
"Ooooo, a Blue and White! It's so cuuuute!"
"Yes, it is. And it demonstrates that I am a 21st-century-type of sensitive guy with a soul who hasn't sold out to Corporate America, who treats women as equals and understands the karma of... WHOA Ha Ha, best not look in that directory, please"

Doesn't Apple have at least one of its testes in a jar in Bill Gates's office?
Because I thought Microsoft had Apple by the short curlies in some bidness arrangement...

Although I'm ignorant of this products capabilities and what the rest of the industry has to offer I still think you should buy this product.

Meg, King is still going on about that?
I don't know how they expect that a laptop they give to a 7th grader is going to last until they graduate from high school.
Especially when it takes 7 or 8 years.....

I thought that wasn't necessary with build 456 and it was only for use with the beta software released in eastern europe!

Wow, those are great commercials on the Apple site.
"It was a horrid little machine. I never could understand...how I was supposed to....move things around, or open anything. I mean, even though I used it for years, I never used it well. And now that I have a Mac, I'm happier. The way the Mac works, it's...so intuitive-- the way it works seems like the way your brain is supposed to work. I get it. And I don't get the PC. I never did. My name is Sarah Whistler. And I'm a writer."
AND I'M A COMPLETE MORON.

I told me very-non-techie older brother to buy a Mac, along with my working-on-PhD-in-English sister. If you just want to turn the friggin machine on and do work, and you never plan to upgrade hardware, Macs are still better machines for the money.
If you're a geek, you really should run Linux. Someday soon I'm going to have to upgrade.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm seriously considering buying a Mac. Yeah, me, Ms. "Who the hell decided that the 'Eject Disk' command should not be the proper way to eject disks" herself. The interface has gone through some major changes, and I like them for the most part. Meanwhile, Windows has devolved into a nightmare in which Start menu icons hide from you and nonfunctional DLLs download and install themselves while you sleep.
It's too bad that the new icons, buttons and such are designed for mainstream (read "bad") taste. If I wanted to look at little plastic trinkets, I'd put quarters into the vending machine at the local supermarket.
I've got a couple of questions about the current version of MacOS. First, is it possible to maximize windows to completely cover the desktop? Yeah, I know that's not a question any proper geek would ask, but I just don't like wasting so much of the monitor. Also, is there a way to turn off all shell animation? I don't have time to wait around for cartoonish special effects while I'm trying to get things done.
