Petition to bring back Ford Prefect
A comedy conversation
by John Hargrave 128,742 73 09/26/2002 01:12 PM 253 views

|
Ford Prefect, most of us will agree, has been one of the consistently funniest and most valuable contributors to our message board.
Several months ago, he left us for parts unknown, and I think you will agree with me that his presence has been sorely missed. His ranking has dropped down to #8 overall, which is not fitting for such a legendary figure among us. In fact, it's downright shameful.
I would like to use this conversation as an informal "petition" to bring back Ford. If he touched your life, if he made you smile, ask him back right now. Maybe he just might see it.
Don't hesitate. Make the commitment now.

Oh ok, fine. Come back if you want to. I'm tired of all the one liners anyway. We could use some good debate the Ford Way.
Not only that, but it would nice if we could put away one part of the GAB lexicon. Now if we could just get Mike Moon back. Nothing like some Drunk Angry Hollie to get the blood flowing.

You realize any sarcasm in this thread will be ignored and he'll see this thread as another desperate attempt for website traffic by John Hargrave's over-inflated ego, don't you?
I honestly thought ford was a very funny gabber, when he wasn't taking things too seriously. I wouldn't mind having him back.
Givin the things he's said about you and gab though, he'd have to swallow a lot of pride in order to return.
It would be like if he swore he'd never work for "The Man" again, quit his job to start his own business, and then entertained a job offer from someone.
He'd never do that.

Think of all the times Ford Prefect has gotten you to chuckle at another's misfortune, or made you scroll to the bottom of a thread through all of his long-winded gum-flapping. He brings you teh funny 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no matter where in Michigan it may be. Think of all he provides - isn't it worth just one click per year? Even if it's your first time, go ahead, dig up an old Ford Prefect post, and click an otto, or two, or three to keep this high-quality entertainment coming to you for years to come. Click now and Ford will send you this sporty tote bag with a meandering rant about the state of the Catholic church on the side. Click 10 ottos and you'll receive this handsome Ford Prefect umbrella! Won't you please click Ford Prefect's otto today to keep his charm and wit strong for the next fiscal year, and beyond?
this is what I've been waking up to on my clock radio all damn week. it's at the point where if i catch Jason Beaubien on the street i'm going to kick him in the shins and take his wallet.

I'll join this appeal for Ford to come back.
And then I'll agree with Scooter. John, Ford thinks you're a egotistical maniac who contributes nothing to this board. I'm not kidding, and I'm not pulling any punches. The whole "swearbot" thing was the last straw. The idea of enforcing ethics on him that he doesn't agree with puts him into a frothing rage. He likes some of the people who still post here, so he lurks, but I don't think he'll ever give you the satisfaction of seeing him come back. If HoB dies somehow, he's still not coming back.

I'd like to think that at some point John will realize that those measures were bad for his bottom line and he revokes them. Some of his best posters tolerate them and continue to post as much as ever, some like me check in once in a while, and many of the best simply refuse to return because of them.
Tough cookies, John. You made your bed.

It's true!
It's like bizzaro gab. Basically the same as here only it's not specificly a comedy board so people can have serious threads and stuff. They're having a secret santa and everything!
How come we don't have a secret santa?

well, the IP matches this morning's article, but it's different from the one in yesterday's articles thread. curious.
unless john, like me, posts from more than one computer. but it's still odd that yesterday afternoon he was at one address and this afternoon he's at another.
unless he's got some dynamic IP thing goin' on.

Dude, John runs a website. Those banner ads RAKE in the dough.
Yesterday he was probably posting from his home in Malibu and today he's posting from his villa in Tuscany.
If the subnet is 126.194.201.xxx it means he's in the ZugJet at 40,000 feet.

i don't give a rat's ass either way if ford comes back and fills the board with his brand of illogical and ill-concealed self-aggrandizing diatribes.
what's curious to me is why john has taken such an interest in his return. if he wants him to come back, why does he give a crap what we think? he knows just as much as anyone what a controversial character ford was-- appealing this issue to us seems contrary to the fact that he runs the board. if he wants ford back, he can take other measures than this meager thread asking for us to back him up.
he also knows why ford and the rest decided to leave. why is this focused on ford? why not evilpanda? or moon? or postbear? and how can he ask any of them to come back when he supposedly caused them to leave in the first place? and if sincere, how can he offer not so much as an apology or acknowledgement of the separation that exists now?
i think it's a hoax.
and i still don't like ford.

I know this sounds like I'm making it up, but I honestly had no idea that Ford supposedly hated me. Lots of people say lots of things, and it all kind of runs together sometimes. Why, just this week we had a very pleasant and civil e-mail exchange.
However, I don't think there's any pride to swallow, because many people have left our community over the years, then have come back. Heck, even our own Al Natanagara swore off GAB back in its second year, then eventually came back. And that was good, because we like having Al around.
Similarly, I just thought more of you would say you liked Ford; his controversialness added a lively spice to GAB.

According to Ford he's truely happy he is rid of this place.
Petitioning him to come back is like trying to talk an AA member into having a drink. It's probably not a good idea. not just for the reformed alcoholic, but for the other patrons of the bar.

Ok, that does it. What have you done with the Real John Hargrave?
John, you're always telling us we need to be more friendly. You're always saying we need more humor and less fighting. Just yesterday you hollered at us for all the in-jokes.
Now you're saying Ford being here, and all the fighting it caused, was good for this place?
I enjoyed a lot of Ford's posts. I thought he could be very funny sometimes and I don't think I'd have a problem if he came back, although I see no reason to beg or even ask him to come back. He'll come back if and when he's ready to come back.
Please forgive our ignorance, but this thread seems very unlike you and very uncharacteristic of the direction we all thought you wanted Gab to go in.
Also, there's no way in hell I'll believe you don't lurk on House of Bugs once in a while.
This thread is just plain weird

People who should come back:
Ford.
Pobble, but not at the same time as Ford.
The Dirty Vicar.
Vertical Bob.
Mike Moon, at least long enough to do the MMNN.
My sanity, at least occasionally.

I love Hargrave (in several unhealthy ways), but he seems to be GAB's equivalent of Commandant Lassard-blissfully unaware of what's going on and only occasionally popping in to enact some inane rule or throw out a trite comment.

THe only way I see that you can make this place better is to ask Ford to have Butnutter and Squeamish join him in his absents (and with any luck, abstinence. The last thing we need is mini-Emersons like them running around this earth.) Ford doesn't need to be here. I kinda like being able to come here without some hornytoad asking if he can "fly" over and see me.....nude.

OK, we have five votes for Ford returning, two votes against, a few undecided, and one "I don't give a rat's ass" (thank you Onion). Anybody else care to weigh in?
This is like the time that the nation voted on whether Andy Kaufman should return to Saturday Night Live.

heh.
he writes a rather fordesque tome detailing how mormons can be excommunicated.
then he wraps it all up nicely in a final paragraph likening GAB, a comedy messageboard, to the mormon church.
obviously this is a logical mindset we're dealing with here.

i knew a kid in high school who took everything in life way too seriously. i didn't see him very much when we went to different colleges, 'cause by the time i graduated high school he'd seriously freaked me out. a few years later, i read in the paper that he was arrested for discharging a shotgun into the air during an argument with his brother about who should be invited to a party they were throwing.
i don't know what this has to do with ford, but i like to tell stories.

If someone is addicted to something so much that it becomes a problem, good for them for kicking the habit.
My point is if he's letting things piss him off that much then something is wrong. It's not Gab's fault he feels the way he does.

We could go flood their board. Everyone sign in with several new identities and start stupid threads about stupid things (which for me is pretty easy). Then, John writes an article about the 'prank', and we all give it uber-clickies, and it becomes the funniest article ever, or at least for the month, and goes out to all the erstwhile Gabbers in their monthly newsletter.
Oh yes, I'm certain that would make them all like John again and want to come back.
