A comedy conversation by John Hargrave 128,751 73
04/25/2004 12:21 AM 758 views

It pains me greatly to announce this, but I am shutting down my personal site ZUG. These last three years since getting laid off from my hit comedy web show Computer Stew have been really hard on me. I have tried to set a certain comedy tone in the writing of John's Journal, but I am getting tired of it. Today, I was reading some of my older Journal entries and pranks. I thought back to my hey day of Computer Stew, and about all the pranks that I used to play at ZDNET. I realized I am getting too old for this. Even Sean Connery had to retire his role as James Bond at some point, so I suppose I should retire my role as the King of Dot-Comedy before become Jerry Lewis.

I am sorry that you fans have to hear it this way. With the passing of ZUG, my fan forum GAB will be shut down too. I have enjoyed your love and adoration all these years, but you should really start looking for another place to call you comedy home. I recommend humor bomb dot com, they stole all my good stuff. In any case you have until June, before I transfer ownership of ZUG.com to Deutsche Bahn AG.

This has been a really hard decision for me to come to, but I felt that it had to be done so I can concentrate on other projects like my new book and T.V. show pilot. I just do not have the time to devote to this website that I used to, and rather than have it fall into disrepair I would rather end it on a high note.

In honoring John in giving up Zug, I will give up something as well; my goal to be a better person. Thank you John for showing us that giving up is much easier than wasting our time trying something that is a little painful. In fact, I think I may start doing crack and move to the box under I-10. Thank you JOHN THANKS A LOT I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR EXAMPLES! YOUR WERE MORE THAN A COMEDY KING, YOU WERE SETTING AN EXAMPLE FOR US ALL!

ATTENTION Doctors, Fireman all those with something, give it up. Lets show John that we are 100% behind him. Becuase if John can't stick it out, why should we!

I can't work at my home, because my cable modem connection keeps going out. It is driving me nuts. Also, the entire site keeps going down since the ISP totally revamped the server. I am a workaholic. Really, but I just do not have the time to stay up on a Saturday night trying to fix things or the finances to invest into this site anymore. The banner ads cover approximately 6% of the cost, and they are rarely clicked anyway. Believe me it is better that I pull the plug, than let this website eat into my son's college fund.

ZUG as you probably know is the German word for train. Deutsche Bahn AG has offered a deal that is quite lucrative for the domain name. All site content, posts, and the technology behind GAB will remain property of Media Shower, Inc. after the sale. I could entertain offers to sell those portions of ZUG to interested parties.

Please share your thoughts and ideas here. I will attempt to answer all your questions in the last newsletter where I will make a formal announcement about the sale.

I'll bet it's a Shakespeareload more than $60 a month. I don't know anything whatsoever about what it takes to run a website like this, but the site must easily get tens of thousands of page loads a week, and that's just me hitting "refresh". I'll bet he uses up a ton of bandwith, and the years of threads that are archived must take up a ton of space.

Beeblebrox,

I can't imagine we would get the straight dope if he were indeed to make a move, but financial troubles cannot be the reason, as in the past he has taken other measures to help afford or offset the costs, and hasn't even scratched the surface of options available to him, like having users donate, different or more banners, etc...

Odd to me too that he makes no mention of HOB at all.....

Okay, people. Do you know what I had to go through to get the passwords for those accounts? And yet at least 4 of you clicked them. I think you meant to give them to MY account. So please click. Now.

Vlad did the same thing way back when it was easy to hack the icons. Vlad had fun doing it. Changes were made, Tim Elkins had an anuerism or some such, but Vlad never got the boot. Vlad wished the search still worked so you could see the threads. It was damn fun. One thing about John is he can still appreciate the humor in this situation. Vlad hopes and prays.

I don't think you want to be John. You just want the icon.

A bump, because you know somebody is going to read the thread and not notice the date on it.

ZUG has been sold! Everybody panic!

Bumping threads in a funny way hard to master it is.
