I'm having some slight difficulty typing at the moment, on account my arms don't bend too well. You see, I just gave blood for the fourth time, and for the fourth time, it was a pain in the ass.
I gave blood the first three times at my church. The first time I donated, I experienced a ringing in my ears and I nearly passed out. The second time, people who heard about the first time kept making fun of me. The third time, it took about 25 minutes because I have small veins and one of the walls had been pushing against the needle, requiring them to readjust it several times. I assume most of you know how much it sucks feeling a needle moving around in your arm. Once again, I nearly passed out. All of those, however, pale in comparison to the one today.
I got a call a few days ago. They said they needed some O positive people down at the blood center and asked if I'd be willing. I unselfishly agreed. So I went down there, answered all the questions and what not, and sat me down prepare me for the blood extraction.
As I sat there, I realized I had not mentally prepared myself for this. I tried for a few minutes before realizing that it was impossible. The needles they use are gigantic and I'm a real wuss when it comes to pain. So anyway, they finally put the needle in (I squeaked when they did) and proceeded to drain me. This went better then usual, althought the bag still took forever to fill. It was filling the little tubes that they have to do afterwards that proved problematic.

I'm not too clear on what happened there. The tubes just refused to fill up, and after numerous adjustments, blood started leaking out around the needle. At this point, they decided to pulll it out but were having some trouble with it. They ended up bruising the hell out of my arm. Right now I can see an area about the size of a quarter that is dark purple, and this isonly the spots not covered by the bandage. They taped an ice pack on over the bandage to lessen the bruising.
Since those needed to be filled in order for my blood to be used, they decided to go into my other arm. At this point, I was very light headed and had to rest a while. When I was ready, they did the same to my other arm, and once again, the tubes would not fill. The nurse tried adjusting it, but accidently pulled the needle out and stabbed me again about two lower than the vein. I had my eyes closed this entire time, so I could only hear what was happening.
"Okay, I'm going adjust this a little...OOPS! (I felt a sharp sting at this point) I'm sorry, I accidently pulled it out and stabbed you. Oh, that's kind of messy."
They got a bandage on me, but I also heard them cleaning something off the floor, which I found disturbing. Since both my arms were now unusable, they couldn't draw the blood and therefore the bag I had just filled could not be used. Fan-freaking-tastic.
The worst part was, the nurse felt terrible. She kept apoligizing for hurting me and messing it up, but really, it wasn't that bad. I wasn't nearly as light headed as I usually am, and I told her this to try and comfort her.
So yeah, blood doning kinda sucks some times. I have bandages on both my arms, people will think I'm a drug fiend, and I am afraid to lift anything heavy. But at least I got juice and cookies.

I don't care enough to read all that. From what I did read, you're having problems because you gave blood. Well, that's what you get for giving blood. Screw the people that are dying. You need your blood!

Okay, I took the time to read it cause I felt bad. So my new answer is HA HA! You got stuck many times, and they couldn't even use your blood. That's irony. Unless your blood is lacking iron. THen it's just funny.

I always wondered what they did with "expired" blood. I'm sure the stuff doesn't last forever, and it doesn't always get used up, so do they sell it to vampires, or what?

They freeze it. It does last for a while (I don't know the exact length, a couple decades, at least) and when they need it, they thaw it. Just like your parents did when they had artificial insemination.

Last time I went to give blood, all went as well as usual. Until I went to go drink my sugary drink. As I popped the top on my orange juice, suddenly my arm started gushing blood and I almost passed out.
As soon as I felt better I got my keys and suddenly there were two nurses looking at me very concerned and trying to guilt me into driving.
I drove anyways. I figure if what they tell me is true, then I saved a life by donating. So if I killed someone on the way home, I figured I'd be about even.

I've donated twice more since I wrote this. My fifth donation was perfect. No pain and it was quick and smooth. Apparently this was to lull me into a false sense of security since the next time I donated, I almost fainted again.
Also, in keeping track of the amount donated, does my fourth donation count even though they couldn't use the blood?

I passed out the second time I gave blood. I've been fine ever since. and ask the phlebotomist to take the blood from else where next time, if you know it's small or collapses easily, there are other places, though not as convenient.
don't go to nursing/medical assistant/phlebotomist school you practice draw blood on each other. Talk about track marks and bruising.

The first (and only time thus far) I gave blood, I was sure to eat a good breakfast, lunch, and the cookies and juice they provided. I felt great and giving blood wasn't a bad experience like I'd expected.
I then went to work after school and promptly passed out on the first customer that came through my line in Kmart. It was a wicked experience. I literally saw my vision go black and the next thing I somewhat remember is my head bouncing up and down on the keypad.
Nice. --By the way, I am not selfish with my blood. I've never been able to because of low iron or medications taken in the previous year(s).--
