This is a tough exercise. I mean, Alternative Rock is pretty much mainstream rock now. 99% of it sucks. 99% of all music sucks.
I tend to think there's two types of classic rock. "Bad" classic rock, the mullet-head crap they play OVER AND OVER again on classic stations. Tom Petty, Bob Seger, J Giels, Aerosmith, etc. Then there's the "good" classic rock, the stuff that influenced everything that came after. Beatles, The Who, and, um, um, I'll think of a few more.
My list:
- Doc's song about gettin' gay with John Hargrave
- Acoustic rock
- Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
- 80's alternative rock
- late 80's gangsta rap
- "good" folk (newer upbeat stuff, not that hippie-dippie bull dyke Earth-mother junk)
- classical (I'm not into it, but I recognize its importance)
- Funk
- Jazz
- Bluegrass
- 60's classic rock
- "first generation" rock. Chuck Berry, Buddy Hollie, etc
- That Dental Hygeine song I made
- 90's alternative rock
- Heavy Metal (real stuff, not poser hair bands)
- 70's classic rock
- 00's alternative rock.
- Fingernails on a chalkboard.
- Dance, house, electronica, or whatever the hell the kids call it these days.
- Country
- Anyone who doesn't work at a radio station yet still calls themself a DJ.

I can't make a list. Put it this way, if it's by Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson or Britney Spears, it blows goats.
If it talks about Frost-ing the police or putting caps in your ass, it blows goats.
If it's talking about trailers, prison, your Mama and her 5 husbands and her fight with alcholism it blows goats.
I can pretty much tolorate anything else.

I dont like much music from now
In my cd player in the car at the moment:
Janis Joplin: The Essential Janis Joplin (2 cd set)
Methods of Mayehm (Tommy Lee's quasi metal/rap album. Musically poor but the lyrics are hysterical)
Evanescence which I bought for $12 at Circuit City and now I now WHY it was $12
Hypocrisy
Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and
Tool

I've actually kind of gotten into some alt/country lately. So like Wilco, Neko Case, early Ryan Adams, Decibully, etc.
So now pretty much the only genre I still have trouble listening to is rap. I like some rap, but the stuff I do enjoy is mostly on an ironic level.
Other than that, I'm kind of an indie prick. I do go out of my way to explore and find more obscure stuff, but I try not to be pretentious about it.

You've named yourself Cobain grrl, much like a hated AOL-er teenager, and the poster was drawing attention to your stupid name by saying, "Your mnn is dead..." where mnn = man, thus making you out to be a windowlicker.

You know what's freaked me out about the music world recently? 60's and 70's rock collections being hawked on TV by really old Monkees and such.
I mean you listen to a song for years and years. You know it by heart. You dig it deeply. Then suddenly they pull out video of the band performing it (years before MTV and whassup with that?) and you finally get to see the artists AND THEY ARE DAMNED DIRTY HIPPYS!!
Most of them are pretty fem looking as well. Well that will burst your 70's music enjoyment bubble, let me tell you.
Somehow in the back of your mind, the artists updated themselves with the ages. It freaks you out to see 'that song' performed by some guy wearing tights, a codpiece, and a peace tee shirt with it cut to show his nipples.

No - the Australian group "Men at Work" sang about Vegemite. Vegemite is a sandwich spread from down under - and it looks like its from down under, because it's dark brown, squishy and vile.
Instead of being a sandwich spread made from delicious sweet grapes (jelly) or gooey marshmallow (Fluff), it's a sandwich spread made from yeast. We all know Australia was a penal colony, and they should be penalized for making that crap.

Oh it's easy to slag rap, as most of it is complete Shakespearee, but you have to make exceptions.
Check out The Roots. Them guys are awesome. So are Jurassic 5 and anything with Q-Bert or Cut Chemist on it.
There's also the Beastie Boys and House of Pain if the black thing scares you.
There's always an exception. Country sucks except for Johnny Cash.
Dance music sucks except for the X-Ecutioners.
Electronic Music sucks except for Boom Boom Satellites.
See?

Well my mama didn't want me
On the day I was born
I was born without a body
I got nothing but scorn
But I always loved music
All I had was my hands
I dreamed I'd be famous
And I'd work at The Sands
Singing, Tabletop Joe, Tabletop Joe
Now everyone will know
That I'm Tabletop Joe
I had trouble with the pedals
But I had a strong left hand
And I could play Stravinsky
On a baby grand
I said, I'm gonna join the circus
Cause thatТs where I belong
So I went to Coney Island
I was singing this song
Tabletop Joe, Tabletop Joe
Now everyone knows
Yeah I'm Tabletop Joe

I am listening to The Cars's first album, through headphones, digging Moving in Stereo.
Peter Gabriel
Kate Bush
Nick Drake
Paul Simon
Big Mama Thornton
Ella Fitzgerald
Steve Winwood-(with or without Blind Faith or Traffic)
Eric Clapton-- go listen to Layla again
Jeff Buckley
Tim Buckley
John Eddie
Robin and Linda Williams
Christine Lavin
Indigo Girls
Tom Robinson
Kate and Anna McGarrigle
Brian Wilson, especially his first solo release with "Love and Mercy"
Barenaked Ladies
Pink Floyd
Bruce Coleridgeburn
Queen
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Robbie Robertson (with and without The Band)
Leonard Cohen
Phil Keaggy
Weather Report
However, "best/worst" is really easy. Best is hearing whatever you really want to hear, exactly when you want to hear it, and worst is hearing something you absolutely do not want to hear when you don't want to hear it.
Easy as storebought apple pie.

2. Classical
3. Classic rock
4. Alternative rock
5. everything else
6. rap/hip-hop
7. techno
8. country
As far as I'm concerned if you've heard 6 hip-hop/rap songs, you've heard them all. It's always one of these:
1. I'm so great
2. We're in a club
3. we're in the ghetto
4. we love music
5. I like asses
6. I have a hard life

I RATHER DISLIKE THIS THREAD. IT'S A pain in the ass.
Now most of you probably thought that I had CapsLock on because of the above message. This is incorrect. I in fact held down the SHIFT key while typing everything until "pain in the ass". My work here is done.
