Crashing the Ren Faire
A comedy conversation

I was chatting with a co-worker who recently went to a local renaissance fair. If you've ever been to one of these things, you know that it is the kind of place where you can let your freak flag fly: people come dressed up as knights, trolls, witches, dragons, and village idiots, to name but a few.
It got me to thinking: is there any type of costume that could NOT be assimilated into the rennaisance faire experience? You could come dressed up in a bridal gown, for instance, or as the cartoon character "Ziggy," but no one would bat an eyelash (except for the 300-pound biker dude who would probably want to make love to you).
I submit the question to you, dear GAB: is there any costume that would not work at the ren faire?

I'd say a woman suit made from fresh, supple, human flesh would probably cause at least some of the people there to run away.

I go to the PA ren faire. People come dressed as all kinds of things. The "regulars" however, made many rude comments about those dressed "out of period."
No one told me I had to have my monthly visitor to attend. That should be in the ad.

A Stormtrooper.
Though a guy in a stormtrooper outfit would probably stand a good chance of getting laid by one of the wenches.

w3, my first renfaire I wore a hand folded kilt cause frankly, I hadn't dropped the bucks to get a real one yet. I got lots of comments all day from folk saying that I was much more "period" than the folk walking around in professionally taylored kilts.
I was real tempted to ask them how "period" their rubber horns were. Or get nasty and talk about their "period" wristwatch.
My whole point is SHADDUP AND ENJOY THE DAMN DAY AND THE BUSTIERRES.

I rent my costumes there. My bustiere is more of a Goth/Metal?punk style then Ren Faire.
I had a helluva good time. Drank mead, watched guys poke each other with big stick while riding horses.
The porta potties sucked with the long skirts though.

When I lived in Rochester, NY there was some ren fair that was held a couple hours away right on the coast of one of the great lakes.
What I wanted to do was to get a couple dozen big guys, dress up in Viking costumes and then row into the fair in one of those cool dragon-prows longboat. Then we'd jump out and sack the ren fair.
People would be laughing and cheering thinking it was some kind of performance art. Up until we started decapitating people and setting Shakespeare on fire.
After a good plundering, raping and pillaging we'd hop back into the boat and take off.

heh....I consider all of my danish ancestors to be Vikings.
Poor for the historical aspect but makes the fact that they were nothing more than shipbuilders more interesting in my head.
I have no pictures that pre-date the 1900's.
That not withstanding rumor through the family is that the shipbuilders descended from actual Vikings thats good enough for me.

John, might it be King Richard's Fair? At any rate, I don't think I could wear anything but a smile as I walked through there. To each their own, but I think that whole lifestyle
is completely amusing and anyone who takes themselves too seriously doing it deserves a gauntlet upside the head.

We roam around the forest looking for fights.
We're men, we're men in tights.
We rob from the rich and give to the poor, that's right!
We may look like pansies, but don't get us wrong or else we'll put out your lights.
We're men, we're men in tights (TIGHT tights),
Always on guard defending the people's rights.
When you're in a fix just call for the men in tights!
