Yesterday I was speaking to one of you American gabbererers .
We were showing each other how dumb we are when it comes to knowledge of the others country.
I have come to the conclusion that American TV shows have a lot to answer for when it comes to tourism.
As an example of the sort of exposure Aussies get to the American culture , 2 of the most popular US shows shown here at the moment are Jerry Springer and Maurry Povich.
Going by these shows you can easily guess what sort of image we get of America !
Why in hell would you let these shows be aired outside of the US ???

I don't think they are 2 of the most popular shows. I think it is more like 'friends' and the CSI's. Jerry ans Maury are only shown on cable.

If Jerry Springer was popular here, the show would have a better time slot than 12 pm am pm noon.

If it tells you anything, I've never watched either of those crap shows. They are a joke in the states, though some trailer park types obviously watch them or there would not be a dozen or so of them on.
I think they are designed for those too unsophisticated to understand soap operas.

I did some tracking on the producers of the Maury P, Montel, Oprah, Dr Phil, Judge Judy and Springer and they all lead back to one parent company: Al Jazeera.

The positions of "foreigners who are quite similar to Americans and therefore not fear-inducing" have been filled. Beat it, Aussies.

I watch very little TV and the only times I've seen Springer is when I'm flipping thru the stations.
And as for Steve Irwin - yes he's a bloody galah , but he's a galah that spends the majority of the money he makes on helping to protect endangered species.

I don't judge Aussies by what I see Steve Irwin do. Don't judge me by Jerry Springer. Unless you're actually wathing the episode that I'm on. It was all about someone telling me a deep dark secret that they had been hiding from me. We ended up fighting and Steve had to break us apart.

Isn't this what's on every show?

Several years back, I worked at a nursing home in Arizona. Many of the residents spent most of their days watching TV. The most popular stuff, by far, was Jerry Springer, anything on TBN, or Laurence Welk.
I didn't last very long.

Advertisers paying money for commercial slots want a slightly better demographic than "trailer park types". It is my impression that these shows are watched by New Englanders and Midwesterners to remind us why we didn't move to the South. (NW Pacific-ers would watch it, but none of those hippie-treehugger / slacker-rocker / computer-programmers have TVs anymore.)
