A question for Chris Garrett
A comedy conversation by Livewire 78,229 13

I'm interested in getting into radio. People tell me every day that I have an excellent voice for radio. They also tell me that I have an excellent face for radio, so I must be a natural.

How do I get into this fun and fascinating field?

P.S., If you actually have some real advice you could send it by email, or post it here to further the mocking.

Get a job at Domino's and deliver a pizza to the radio station in your area. Then talk like a radio announcer guy when you ask for payment. That'll impress them and then you can ask for a job.

I'm sure it works for some people.

Just an idea.

Also, you'll probably make more money as a pizza delivery guy.

Start out on pirate radio.

"Yar, that was one of me fav'rite sea chanties, "Blow the Man Down". Comin up in the next hour we have "What do You do with a Drunken Sailor?" and...well, those are really the only two songs we have. Yar."

Ok...first of all, I worked for Pizza Hut...NOT Dominos.

Livewire, for once I will give a serious answer...no joke.

The answer is....start small...really. People always ask me, "Should I go to Broadcasting School?" and I tell them that it is a waste of time and money. Sure, you'll learn about the history of radio, and all that, but that will get you nowhere.

Trae's story is 100% true. That's EXACTLY how I got into radio. I chalk it up to having a good voice, and being in the right place at the right time, and starting small. This was also 1989, and minium wage was $3.35/hr.

You will definitely NOT get rich when you start out....have another job, and go to your local radio station in town, and ask if you can intern in your spare time. 9 times out of 10, you won't get paid for that, hence the other job comment. Do it in your spare time.

Or, another thing you can do, is go and simply ask if there is part-time work at the station. Ask to become a "board-op." These are the people who run the controls while someone is out doing a broadcast somewhere....lots of people would love to hire a reliable board-op, because they are hard to come by, they figure for the same cash, they can work at a McDonalds....but, that doesn't matter, if you're hungry, and if Radio gets into your blood...and believe me, it WILL.....you will be willing to work for Shakespearety pay and crappy hours. Ask to board op one day a week if your schedule can handle it.

Also, don't be picky when it comes to choosing stations.....I don't know how many you have in your town, but don't immedately go seek out employment at your favorite, or the number one station.....look for the smaller ones...listen for either ones who do ALOT of live remotes at businesses, or a station who does alot of sports games (Highschool sports are the best ones)..those are the ones where the board-ops are hard to come by, and those are the places where you'll get your foot in the door.

Like I said, start small.....learn the ropes, and the controls even before you THINK about opening up the microphone and talking....it's a long road, and with patience...ALOT of it....it will pay off.

Any other questions, feel free to email me in my profile...be glad to help.

Suggestion from someone who knows nothing about the industry:

Maybe get some practice- like do some internet radio. if you do it at a reasonable time, some from gab might even listen to it!

This is a fascinating story. I went to the cop's ten year high school reunion. Some of the other attendees were talking about Mickey being on 104 KRBE.

I had a few to drink throughout the evening when I later ran into this man with that stereotypical smoovey talk voice. I assumed he was Mickey Fischer because nobody would purposely speak like this.

I was wrong. Mickey was Michelle and I don't listen to that station, so I didn't know.

And I've just bored myself to tears with that one.

I know a lot of people who have radio shows on the local college station. They aren't students; but because it's a state school they will allow other people to host shows.

My friend's mom has one with Arab music (yeah, I'll bet that's a popular one).

Anyway, my point is that you can get some experience for free and have tapes of yourself.

I had a roommate who was a d.j. in college and then got a job at an oldies station on Sunday mornings (like at 3:00 a.m.). He got the job (such as it was) because he had tapes of himself at work as a d.j.

The best job would be if you could be like that guy who does movie trailers. I swear it's the same guy who does every trailer. Me must make a mint.

Uh, yeah, ME must make a mint. I meant to write HE must make a mint.

Me must make no money, because I do not have a melodious voice.

There are Universities with their own radio stations here, but I'm pretty sure they don't let people off the street have airtime. I'll find out.

There are tons of radio stations here, but many are under the same roof because they're all owned by the same company. I'll try them all. Thanks for the advice, Chris!

Is the rumor true that Chris Garrett and Nina Totenberg are the same person?

Because I've never heard them together.

Jeromium:

Here are a couple of excellent recordings of sea chanteys for your collection:

Blow, Boys, Blow (a classic, and having nothing to do with my brother.)

Turning the Tide by the Ancient Mariners. A personal favorite.

What can I say. I like sea chanteys. Shut up.

The secret to getting on the radio is to be really, really, really tiny.

My grandfather and father were in radio for years. My grandfather pioneered the only black radio station in Memphis during the 60's and it was the number one station for years. That or he's going senile.

But seriously, when she posted pictures she was white. So she probably just meant that her grandfather ran a station that hired black personalities and was targeted at the black demographic.

Or she was posting negatives.

No I am not black, the rest of the Memphis wouldn't buy airtime to advertise on the radio station because the sales reps of the station were black. So they hired my grandfather to run sales while he was the GM or something.

First you post white pictures, then Spicey says you're black, now you say you're white. WHICH IS IT!?

Geez. You're like Michael Jackson with a time machine.

Sandra Tsing Loh, too.

And maybe even Dallas stockbroker and analyst David Johnson,

but only because he's related to Bob.
