Which is why I didn't say "THE most disturbing thing."
I remember a thread, I may have even started it, that linked to a page featuring dead baby dolls and pictures of kids holding their dead brothers, etc. It was to "help them heal."
Disturbing as hell.

First, let me say that, though I don't know details I can guess the nature of the situation. My condolences and my sympathies go out.
Having said that, this is an interesting opportunity to talk about grief. Would jokes and humour of some sort be appropriate, as icebreakers?
I'm a black humour sort of person. I sincerely hope whoever does my eulogy has at least 10 minutes of killer material (pun intended. There are enough serious, sombre, sympathetic people in the world. So do those of us who have the capacity to make laughter amongst the tears have the right - or even, the responsibility - to do so?
Anyone have an opinion?

I see your point (and somewhat agree with it), but I was asking a broader question. Is ANY form of humour appropriate during grief?
Or even, dare I suggest it, helpful.
An example of what I mean.
(If you don't want to read it, that's fine. If you do, I hope you see the relevance.)

I think it can be, Demo, if the person doing the greiving is the type to appreciate it. Personally, I tend to use humor to get through times of difficulty.
I think it also needs to be innitiated by the person experiencing the loss. When DR first told us he was HIV+ he invited us to joke about it and he started the joking. If he had been all serious and crying and Shakespeare I don't think people would have started joking about it for at least a few minutes.

It's not at all tacky to post pictures of your child on your own weblog. What is tacky is for people to take those pictures and post them on a comedy message board.
I had many miscarriages before the daglet was born, I can't have any more children. Ford's baby was a baby, not a miscarriage. A stillborn baby.
I'm glad they named him, he now has an identity that will live on.
I think I took too many serious pills.

Black comedy rocks.
There was a story in the newspaper back in the spring about an Art Director drunk at a party in NYC, getting up in front of the crowd, waving at the floor to ceiling windows and saying something like "At least now we have a view of the river!" Yes. He was fired the next day.
Comedy=Time+Distance/stupidity.
That is: Jokes are ok after a time, or if it happens in another country or if the event in question is so heniously stupid.
Dags, understand this about Ford: he was posting 9/11 jumpers here, on a comedy web board in seriousness. I have to wonder what kind of greiving he's doing right now. I see those pictures and feel bad for him, even though I dont think too highly of him these days. However I did laugh out loud at Declan's post.

I feel sorry for Ford. I really do. I am grateful everyday that my son is happy and healthy. I'm thankful that I have a happy marriage in which to raise him.
I just read the blog entry. It struck me hard, because I have these things, and he has to endure this tragedy.
I can't say that I have an opinion of him, personally, as he was gone long before I showed up here. From what I gather, he could be a ginormous dick at times. And I'm sure he's gotten a lot of Shakespeare both here and over at that other place for lots of reasons.
But I feel for him, I even shed a tear. Partially because of the tragedy and partially because I have a healthy son. And I'll pray for him. I wouldn't wish this on anyone, because I don't know what I'd ever do if I lost my son, or any future child I may have.
But I laughed like hell at the comments made in this thread. But not for the same re-hashed dead baby jokes. I agree with Demo that humor should be used in times of grief. I don't want a funeral, I want a party celebrating my life.
Poop.

Without having been to his blog, there's a good chance he might not, in fact, be serious about the whole thing. I recall that just a day or two ago Something Awful.com made a big deal out of earnest dead baby websites, so they're kind of in vogue right now. This could be another one of those "Chickens is dead" jokes.

I saw the pics only after I had posted yesterday and GUUUHHH! They haunted my dreams.
"I see dead babies."
I mean, if he wants pics and all (still creepy) then whatever but to post them for the cyber world to see your lifeless child all wrapped up in confirmation clothes with a BONNET on its head??!!
That man should really be shot in the arm for doing that. If not for posting the pics then dressing it up in a bonnet.

Some things should not be joked about , the death of a child is one of them.
Having fun at the funeral of a mate who loved to laugh is fine - but when someone is in such incomprehencible pain because they have lost a child is not funny , its even worse when its done in the face of those grieving.

True story:
I went to visit my grandma in the nursing home at suppertime the other day. Everyone was filling up the cafeteria and either talking quietly amongst each other or staring blankly across the table, as old people do. I was on the cell with hubby-to-be figuring out a game plan for our dinner when all of a sudden an old man in a trucker's cap cupped his hand across his mouth and yelled across the entire room, "WOULD ONE OF YOU FELLAS COME OVER HERE AND HELP ME LOAD THESE BOXES!!"
Of course, there were no boxes and he was yelling at the staff.
The reaction of the room was a blend of "Ehhh, SHADDUP(s)!" and "Graggghhh(s)!"
Matt heard all this over the phone and said, "What the hell was that?" I said, "Comedy gold."
I think of Ausssie Sarah as that old man.

And I thought my 'blog was personal.
He can post whatever he wants, I guess. I don't know the man, but I feel bad for him and his loss.
My grandmother's first baby was stillborn. She could not speak English at the time and there were no relatives at the hospital (this was 1920; I assume my grandfather was working or in a bar buying drinks or something), so no one was translating.
They brought the baby to her, all dressed up. She became enraged, threw a chair at the nurse, and trashed the room.
It wasn't uncommon for people to photograph their dead children years ago. It seems kind of creepy these days. Ford's photos didn't bother me, but that woman's photos of her itty-bitty fetus made me gasp.

My cousin (see previous post) has a "dead baby website" about the son she lost. Kind of a memorial thing, has pics when he was in the hospital, no dead baby pics.
Working at babies R us for 3 years I heard some pretty sad things, the worst were the parents coming in for clothes small enough to fit their dead baby. Sometimes preemie stuff was too big.
We usually sent them to Toys R us for the cabbage-patch doll clothes.
