What Defines YOUR Dorkitude?
A comedy conversation by Phuc 237,919 21

We've all got some aspect of our personalities that separates us from the teeming masses. For some, it's computer programming, for others it's a collection of digital farm porn.

For me, it's this. I took the photos for insurance purposes but realized when I looked at them that it was time to reveal my secret shame: I got GAS.

Dweez would understand.

Seriously, GAB is my secret shame. So many times back "in the world" I want to share my funny but I can't. The normals just wouldn't understand.

Every now and then I think about recruitment. I mean, if I brought one more in then that would be one more that I could share it with. But *alas, it's a finicky world, GAB.

*using words like alas are also shameful

I collect toys. Usually small ones, such as toy airplanes and motorcycles. Hot wheels are a big collector's item for me, as are Tech Deck Dudes, and GI Joes. Sometimes the more obscure the toy, or the more outrageous, the more collectible they are to me.

I also collect stickers. All kinds. I sort them and file them, but hardly ever use them. I usually can't find the perfect place to use them, because once you attach them, you might find something or someplace else that would be cool.

I'm such a geek.

If I collected Hello Kitty, I'd be applying for my very own QTA card.

Although my wife's family sponsored some Japanese exchange students a few years back, and they exchange gifts for Christmas. There's usually a good supply of Hello Kitty stuff sent over. Luckily, my sister-in-law usually claims most of it.

But my collection did start with stickers like these.

I'm a TV geek, but it's gotta be quality elitist crap TV. I went berserkoid over X-files and remained faithful even when it sucked for the last three years. Now I'm latched onto the West Wing even though it too is sucking in its last years.

Basically, every time I find a new show to become attached to, it goes down the crapper. Got a show you want cancelled? Plop me in front of it for a month, and it'll be Shakespeare by next fall. Guaranteed.

I am an unrepentant fishing dork. Last fall, after five years of trying, I finally landed my holy grail. It was an awesome fight. I spent a half hour chasing this thing up and down the river and at one point, I was on my knees threading my pole through the branches of a tree that had fallen into the water. The fish must have gotten pretty turned on by the whole thing however. When I lifted it out of the water, it opened up and let loose an impressive load of salmon spunk all over me like some sort of Piscean porn prodigy.

Strangely, I was OK with that though.

Priestess, you may want to keep that LOTR costume handy. When you are finally booted out of GVG for blissfully unbecoming conduct, that thing may prove useful. I'm not kidding. I'd try to slip Margaret Thatcher the old pickle tickle if she walked through my front door tarted up like Lady Galadriel.

If the later is dorkier, I should qualify that I have now decided to replace Solaris with Fedora Core.

3. Still own and buy toys like Action Figures.

4. Someone has to link to this. It may as well be me since I like Furry art. I normally visited Yerf (which prohibits pr0n) but it's been down so I've been looking through VCL (which is rather gross - it's not moderated like Yerf).

Alright, here it is:

I read Slashdot.

I watch anime - and prefer subtitles over dubbing (but I'll take what I can get).

I work on computers for a living.

I'm in a community choir.

I play video games - especially RPGs.

I watch cartoons on Saturday mornings - and Saturday nights - and throughout the week.

I love the new Battlestar Galactica and really hope that Dirk Benedict gets to make a cameo.

I have read all of Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series and wish I could talk to wolves - and that they'd get to the Last Battle already, dammit!

I read "Lord of the Rings" before it was cool.

I've been to Rennaisance Festivals.

I spend most of my waking hours in front of a computer - even if you don't count work.

GAB takes the majority of my computing time.

And I think I'll stop there. You get the gist.

Hermit-Are you really a furry?

Depending on who you ask, yes or no.

I don't have a "fursona" and don't play Furry MUCKs or RPGs, so many would say no. Some don't say fursonas or RPGs are needed to be a furry, so they'd say yes.

I do like furry art and visit Yerf (or in the meantime VCL) a few times a day to see what's new.

Favorite artists to date are psicoyote, Akira M, EDMOL and Bridget Wilde.

I do hope to get my own style of art good enough to get on Yerf and VCL, but that's taking a while.

2) I enjoy puns.

3) I get a buzz from receiving clickies on an online forum where I will never meet any of the people posting.

Tabula's a contender, but Robin's got the pics to back up her dorkulessness.

I tried playing D&D and magic but was too lazy to learn the rules.

On the plus side, I'm a food dork. I cook every night, subscribe to Cook's Illustrated, think Gourmet is for Emersons, watch Food TV at least on hour a day. I think Alton Brown is great but will scream and throw stuff at the TV when he Frosts things up--like his "chowder" recipe. Jesus Christ, he should be executed for calling that chowda.

Music: In addition to my more normal tastes, I love a cappella music. If I choose to participate in Secret Santa next year... well, now you know what to get me since I don't admit to that in real life!

Books:

I have read more than half the sci fi/fantasy section at Barnes & Noble.

TV:

I love Stargate SG-1, and I am waiting for it to come on the Sci-Fi channel right now. I love the Discovery Health Channel and watch it religiously. I love real detective stories - A&E's Cold Case Files is a favorite of mine. I watch old-style TLC/Discovery Channel documentaries/science shows a lot.

School:

I'm majoring in psychology (the bachelor of science degree, not the B.A.) and micro/molecular biology. Yes, that's two B.Sc. majors at once. I plan for a master's in psych and an M.D.

Internet:

I love webcomics, Fark, and of course, GAB!

Hoo boy. You guys are dorks!

My brother has mine about right, except that I don't think he stressed enough that I enjoy dressing up in 18th & 19th century clothing.

And Al, your GAS seems positively cool compared to my FOAD (fife obsessed acquisitive disorder). I subscribe and contribute to The Ancient Times, Six-Hole Theory and Woodwind Quarterly, and I'm in the Early Flute, Fife & Drum and Wooden Flute e-groups.

Also, when I do French and Indian War reenacting, I dress as a British regular, and I look upon those who dress as French as foppish dorks and those who dress as Indians as pompous wannabees.

Now my brother, he's another story. You kind of have to separate the gay stuff from the just plain dorkish. Like it may be gay to be so meticulous about cooking, but it is dorkish to be an appliance geek. Declan has the Maytag site bookmarked. The first thing he wants to know about a new boyfriend is not what he does for a living, what kind of car he drives or how big his dick is, but what kind of oven he has. And mixer.

He remembers what kind of washer I had two washers ago! And he could tell you what model dishwasher nearly every person he's ever visited has.

I think the thing about me that disappoints him the most is my steadfast refusal to get a Cuisinart food processor.

1. My 150+ DVD collection is alphabetized. I ignore the word "the" in the title. I also sort numbered titles phonetically, rather than grouping them together, i.e. "28 Days Later" follows (the)Tuxedo.

2. Same goes for my 300+ CD collection.

3. I actually used a tape measure to ensure that one end of my coffee table was the exact same distance from the couch as the other end (16.5", in case you were curious).

4. I once sent a picture of my Coleridge to a perfect stranger on the internet, to raise money so that other perfect strangers on the internet could travel to a gathering of even more perfect strangers.

5. I actually felt the need to compile this as a list.

I'm a major car geek. But not the cars one would expect... yeah, I have had a couple of classics including a 1962 Chrysler and a 1970 Hornet, but most of my cars are things like Chevettes, Renaults, station wagons... in addition:

- I have owned 33 cars, currently have 7.

- None of my cars were built after 1987. This is more or less by design; while there are a few cars built after 1987 that I would buy, for some reason I keep finding early 80s cars. Suits me fine.

- I have gone as far as New York state for a car (1985 Renault Encore S 5-dr hatchback, automatic, 1.4L EFI, in a rare blue)..

- I have at one point owned 12 cars at once (it's really fun when they all need oil changes at once... one week I kept exchanging cars at the mechanic's and paid a total of $220, and yes I still have the receipt -- in fact I have a file cabinet full of car titles and data, separated by car, and the folders are in chronological order).

- I'm also a license plate collector, and I get vanity plates for all my cars. (Including the Chevette.)

- I have a database where I keep all my car information such as engine size, number of doors, fuel economy, length/width/height of the car, VIN, price paid (both by me and the original owner)...

and perhaps the #1 worst dork offense of all:

- I name all my cars.

...but hey, at least I look cool, right?

I compulsively mess with try to "repurpose" anything I can get my hands on.

Examples:

Last summer, I found a working 8-track player at a flea market (Even dorkier- I have my father's sweet player from the early 70's, it works and I have about 50 8 tracks for it) and I traded the guts from it with a Nintendo system.

Both worked fine, and you cannot tell they were altered.

I put the guts from a PS2 into my brother's XBOX console. Hilarity ensued.

When I was still living with my parents, I would replace the springs in the VCR for much stronger versions- tapes would shoot across the room.

Worst of all, I can never leave toasters alone... this borders on a sickness for me-

I replace the springs on them so they launch toast.

I repaint them with flames, or various other colors.

I have put a window and fan (similar to what you would see in a computer case) in one toaster, you know, just 'cause it got too hot.

I have altered the heating element so that it would burn words into the bread.

I am now goofing around with an ITX motherboard to see if I can fit it into a PS2 case, which I will then take to work and use.

Dude! I can't believe Chloe knows Clark's secret! She's the absolute worst person to trust with secrets. The show's over now. Every episode will be where Chloe has to fight her ber reporter urges and keep from getting the exclusive. The only thing that can save it know is a Lana-Chloe-Lois-Martha foursome.

What? Clark's mom is hot.

Man. I feel so....nerdy.

I am also a car nerd. Any 80's GMC or Chevy truck gets my full attention, no matter how dented or rusty it is.

I lose sleep over thinking about my next two project trucks.

I am planning to build an offroad wrecker (lifted 80's Chevy...), I have working drawings and everything...

I lose sleep over thinking about the project after the wrecker, an 80's Chevy Crew cab longbed dually on airbags that will lay on the ground. I have details down to tires planned out. I talk about it often, my girlfriend hates me.

I'm a diesel performance nut, I will try to race any sporty car in my 3/4 ton crew cab Powerstroke ford. I claim victory often, even if the other person doesnt know I'm racing them.

I have driven 2 different vehicles with no exhaust other than headers and enjoyed the noise. One was 7+ months, both trucks were square bodied Chevy's.

I have a ton of Pokemon cards, all in sleeves in a cigar box in the bottom of my computer desk.

Video games take up way too much of my time.

I have taken over 600 pictures of my ATV, Blazer, 1 ton GMC, 300zx, or F250, and zero of me or my friends.

I watch the Top Truck Challenge videos religiously.

My only real goal in life is to compete in the Top Truck Challenge, and I talk about it like I'm already for sure going. My friends also hate me.

I have more, but this is getting kinda long..

Dweezil,

My dad plays the sax. Maybe you and he could get together and jam. The only problem is that his influences are The Beatles, The Beegees, and Kenny G, while it sounds like you're more Indie. What say?

I have a charter membership to the Sci-Fi Museum (and EMP, which is connected to it).

I am currently taking a class called "Literature of Science Fiction".

I own every single Stephen King book save one, which I'm making my boyfriend buy for Valentine's Day for me.

I have Linux on my Ipod.

I had Linux on my laptop until Windows broke it, and when my replacement laptop comes in I plan on installing it again.

I go wardriving with my boyfriend.

We have at least 9 computers up and running at this very second in our apartment.

Our wireless node is open to anyone.

We are currently constructing a wi-fi antenna to broadcast our wi-fi signal across I-5 to a co-worked's house about 3 miles away, just to see if it will work.

I have gone to SakuraCon the last 3 years, and am going this year again with possible plans of cosplaying.

That's a tricky one. The cigarette-obtaining power of your mammary glands is not particularly dorky. Bringing it up to turn on the dorks on this message board is, however, pretty dorky... but only if you had a moment of butt clenching self-awareness and realized this after you hit 'submit'.
