Schaivo bill blocked by politics.

And blah blah blah right to die my ass. Her husband caused the brain damage and doesn't want her getting better and testifing or he would take the $4,000,000 plus that's been offered him to walk away. $4 mill? In a second. Come on.

And those damn dirty donkey people are playing politics while she dies of thirst.

She can swallow on her own. If her family wants her alive so badly, why don't they feed her? Let the husband get on with his life.

With his wife in a nursing home, Michael began taking classes in health care at St. Petersburg Junior College. He eventually became a certified respiratory therapist and a registered nurse. Michael today works in an emergency room at a hospital in Florida.

Chickens is right about the Democrats playing partisan politics. I can't believe they are trying to pass last-minute federal legislation for this. I mean, I'm pissed off enough that they would propose special legislation for one particular case, let alone a case that has already been decided by the state courts.

No. . . wait a second. . . there's something wrong with my post. . .

She got brain damage in 1990 from lack of oxygen to her brain for five minuets. She didn't have oxygen to her brain because she had a heart attack. She had a heart attack from a potassium imbalance from starving herself because she was bulimic. She did it to herself.

If I were ever married, which will happen on a very cold day in Tahiti, and got incapacitated in a similar manner, I would rather be allowed to die than have my family's financial resources depleted to pump the equivalent of Slim Fast into my gullet for the next 10 to 20 years.

For all intents and purposes this woman has been dead for the past ten years. The husband is being forced to suffer through it on a daily basis because her parents can't cope with the fact that she's not going to get better.

Because he will not allow them access. The videos you see on TV were from the last time they had access. He stopped her therapy in 1991. He has a team of hand picked doctors that see her for 10 minutes a year.

Sometimes it doesn't matter what a person tells his/her family. When the time comes to let that person die with dignity, the loved ones can't do it.

To me, it shows that he truly loves her that he wants her to finally go in peace. Her parents may think that they are doing the right thing by her, but they aren't. At best, they are deluding themselves that she will miraculously recover, at worst, they are being incredibly selfish because they can't let go.

IF she is really cognizant of her surroundings, what kind of torture must that be? To be unable to speak, move, or respond to those around you?

I hope to hell my family respects my wishes. This issue, I'm sure, has been discussed by people for 30 years thanks to the Karen Quinlan case, and every other case that comes up.

I shudder to think that such a personal issue will be decided by people in power who know nothing about me and what I really want for myself in such a situation.

And I truly feel like my own husband knew me better than anyone else in my family. I would still rather have him, as my ex-husband, make a decision than my parents. (Although both my parents have expressed that they would like to be allowed to die in such a situation, so I'm sure they would do the same for me.)

And now I have to go bump my Frost-ing auction thread again, dammit!

From all indications, only the husband and a few creepy professorial types are trying to let her die.

The real reason that the repubs are trying to "save" her is that they'll look like a bunch of impotent hypocrites to their christo-fascist wackjob supporters if they don't. One lousy guy trying to let one vegetative broad die, and all the machinations of the right wing death cult unable/unwilling to stop him? That would make the painful truth too obvious.

Put yourself in that situation. How long would you sit and wait for her to recover? Wouldn't you move on with your life? Wouldn't you want her to die with dignity? Would you want the gov't to step in because they think they know what's better for your wife than you do? Because you read one website and a couple news stories you think you know everything about this case, and that gives you a right to judge the people involved? I thought judgement was reserved only for God?

Alright, Chickens, I don't want to debate this case in general, but I am curious about one thing you said.

Chickens: Because he will not allow them access. The videos you see on TV were from the last time they had access.

I'd like to see a link to that information.

CNN: At one point Sunday afternoon, the Schindlers were prevented from entering the hospice in Clearwater, Florida, where their daughter is staying. Sources at the scene told CNN that Michael Schiavo was visiting his wife and didn't want her parents in the room at the same time.

That seems to imply that it's unusual for them not to have access.

Heck, even your terrisfight.org link makes reference to parental visits without mentioning that they're unusual.

I used to be a Christian. For real. All evangelical and Shakespeare. Then I remembered that I have a brain. The evangelical approach to the Bible is like buying Larousee Gastronomique and telling the world that it's the book that tells you how to make cookies.

No matter what these supposed "right-to-lifers" think they believe, they are actually just supporting a cabal that uses the bible as asswipe, thinks nothing of murdering thousands to make a buck, and doesn't give a fat rat's ass that if there is a God, they'll spend eternity in the place that's farthest from Him.

He already has a new life with his girlfriend, etc.. He says he's only in it to honor his wife's wishes, and I see no other motive this could be a cover for.

I'm betting a million bucks won't cover much more than a year of round the clock medical care. Even at a hospice. A million dollars comes out to around $2700 a day over the course of a year. This is America, and she's in Florida, I'm betting it's well over a grand a day for her care.

Chi, if they have access again, that's a change. The last time they pulled the tube on her, there was an interview with the parents where they said they had not been allowed access in two years. Something about retribution for having videotaped her reacting to their voices, smiling, eyes tracking that balloon, etc. All non-vegitative state evidences.

And reacting to noise is non vegitative? Depends on the reaction if you ask me, otherwise its just reflex.

Last night on the news a doctor described the medical state she was in. Basically she has no normal brain function though he body reacts to some things (like when she smiles, opens her eyes) it's not because of any outside stimuli or internal thinking its more of a reflex, like when the doctor taps your knee. She has no hope of recovery and is, in essence, a zombie.

I don't agree that starving her is right though. I fully believe that keeping her alive is cruel but killing her in that fashion is more so. People need to wake up and realize that someone is killing her one way or another why not just lethal inject her and let her die quickly? Why is that more wrong than starving her to death? And why is letting her rot in a hospital bed a more humane thing to do? What a wonderful life being a brain dead doll for mommy and daddy to look at each day so they can feel better about themselves until the day they die when FINALLY their daughter can go on to a better place and hopefully pass them as they make their way to hell.

PEOPLE DIE EVERDAY

I think the use of time of the president and congress on this case is terribly wasteful.

We have a huge deficit and there are lots of people who are starving right now because of lack of funding to community services.

$1,000,000 in the account for Terri should be depleted before any decisions should be made.

There are 447 people in the House of Representatives (congress) who make $150,000 per year (for arguments sake). Cost per day for congress to review this case and go all wonky: $188,342.

This is all motivated by fear...what if it happens to us? The vast majority of America is babyboomers who know that they are going to live well into their 100's with all this good technology. They know that since there are so many of them, it is going to create a huge burden for the younger workers, making assisted death look pretty appealing for them. I've given up on a Democrat winning until all the babyboomers are too old to vote. And since I have a feeling that they will have voting booths in nursing homes by the year 2030, that may not be for a while.

There is a lot of what sounds like moaning. But her dad was asking her to say hi, and she eventually cranked out a very drawn out "hi, daddy".

She supposedly says mommy or mom when her mother comes in the room. She turns her head away and frowns when Michael comes in the room.

But Michael will not allow the media in to see this kind of stuff.

If somebody offered me $4M to let my wife's parents do what I believed to be against her wishes I would refuse it, as well.

If the husband is convicted (hell, even indicted) for a crime that put her in that condition I'd say pass the decision-making authority to the parents in a nanosecond. That's not the case, though. When a married person is unable to express their desires for/against medical care it is the spouse that gets to make the decisions, not the parents (isn't this what the fags all want to get married for?). If she had filed for divorce or there was any legal evidence that she wanted her husband to not enjoy the privileges of marriage then I'd vote to let the parents step in instead, but there's not.

I found out today that the settlement money is being used for her care, but the majority of her care is paid by medicade, which is awesome because of the cuts the Republicans are trying to push through on the national level. Then also, this $1000000 settlement is exactly the kind of thing that the president's lawsuit reform would put an end too. Both sides have accused each other of being motivated by greed over a $1 million medical malpractice award from doctors who failed to diagnose the chemical imbalance that caused Terri Schiavo to stop breathing. However, that money, which Michael Schiavo received in 1993, has all but evaporated -- spent on his wife's care and the court fight. Just $40,000 to $50,000 remained as of mid-March.

This is a pretty helpful Q&A about the facts.

I was pissed at the dems for playing politics

In a memo distributed only to Republican senators, the Schiavo case was characterized as "a great political issue" that could pay dividends with Christian conservatives, whose support is essential in midterm elections such as those coming up in 2006.

don't hate the players. hate the game.

It's generally a good idea for lawmakers to pass legislation designed for a single person.

Who's playing politics?

I, for one, am outraged that the Democrats would play politics when the Republicans went through all that trouble to parade a retard around the senate and boo-hoo over her poor brain-deadedness to pander to the stupid Christian conservatives who are Frost-ing up anything and everything that is fun and not churchy.
