I don't know that driving would necessarily be cheaper. Gas prices suck, you have to stop a couple of times along the way to sleep, and that's a lot of wear on your car.

If you've got more than one person, and you split the price of gas, it's not that bad. And if I had a person/people also willing to drive, it could be done in shifts. And I've got a Grand Voyager, so they can crawl in the back and watch a DVD or sleep. And I have a wonderful talent for driving long distances and going with little sleep. I've always loved driving, and I've become a bit of an expert at solo road trips lately.

I was planning on either driving or taking the bus from NYC, depending on the condition of the car at that time.
