The First Annual Gab Pro-Am Challenge.
A comedy conversation

Challenges between some of the article writers here are thrown around all the time, but usually it's just trash talk. I've accepted and given a goodly share myself, but they rarely come to fruition.
*turns page on "Word-a Day" calendar*
But here's an idea that might be fun to actually execute. In the tradition of golf events, we have a Pro-Am challenge, teaming an experienced article writer with a relative newb. Matchups should be announced in this thread; feel free to make any beseeching requests - or brutal refusals - as publicly as possible.
The rules, such as they are, to ensure a level playing field.
Anyone who has written an article is eligible to be a "Pro". Anyone who has NOT written an article, and has started Gabbing in 2005, is eligible to be an "Am".
The article has to be written by the collaborative efforts of the two, and submitted to Chi Chi no later than June 10.
The topic has to be related to television.
The article should contain NO Gab inside jokes, so as to be a suitable potential article choice.
The following three words/phrases must be used somewhere in the body of the article:
"sitting on my couch"
"an amazing quantity of blood"
"morons"
Chi Chi shall be the sole arbiter of victory, by choosing one article to approve. (If he thinks they ALL suck, we beat him with a pillowcase of wet rocks.)
As a prize, the losers have to give each of the winners 3 clicks in a thread created specifically for that purpose.
Also, I'd like to state right now that none of you have the slightest chance of beating me.
Bring it.

1. What's the difference between "Pro" and "Am"?
2. Why can't we have the community vote on them?

Anyone who has written an article is eligible to be a "Pro". Anyone who has NOT written an article, and has started Gabbing in 2005, is eligible to be an "Am".
And having the community vote on things has never, in the time I've been here, worked.
Let the strongest succeed and the weak fall by the wayside!

If anyone else wants to write about the need for a Mark Cuban-Shaquille O'Neal duel (with pistols, and a pirate judge) on live TV, then I am the partner you need.
Pros
I've taken all my newb-bashing immunity shots.
I have absinthe, in case we run into writer's block.
I have access to Cambodian breast milk. This comes in handy more often than you'd think.
Cons
If we don't win, I will hire either Mark Cuban or Shaq to kill you in a duel.

No. Other than the original rules (see the first post) anything goes is up for grabs. If everyone co-incidentally winds up writing about how "Lost" is really a metaphor for high school cliques or the fact that Ray Romano was actually played by a Dr Doom-like robot for the last three seasons of the show, then that's just the breaks.

I'd better elaborate on the piece I'm writing. It's a Christmas Oratorio for this year's Christmas Eve service. I've got about half of the libretto finished, but the music has yet to be written. I'm choosing three sources that I want to use for models for this piece:
J. S. Bach: Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248)
Handel's Messiah
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: "Christus: A Mystery"
What's worse is that I want to take the time to make sure that this one isn't another half-assed attempt on another major poetic piece. That's the main reason I'm so far behind on the work.

At times even I don't even want to be on my own team. Trust me, I'm my own worst literary critic. I've actually had won a couple of awards for my writings, on pieces I thought reeked of cowpies, at my high school. Plus, I was offered a full journalism scholarship due to it, and foolishly turned it down. Looking back, I should have taken that scholarship.

Sylvester's post reminds me of when I won my own high school writing contest.
In 9th grade English, my teacher was a former amateur-league basketball player who dabbled in emo-poetry. How Mr. Brown had landed a gig as English teacher I do not know, though I suspect his knees were scuffed during the job interview.
The point is, he was an illiterate buffoon. He thought that Aldous Huxley was a winger for the Mighty Ducks. Often times, he corrected my essays encouraging me to "dumb them down."
Anyway, towards the end of the year there was a school-wide contest to write about the Navajo language used as code in World War II (see Windtalkers if you want an inaccurate representation of this). I submitted an insightful, shamelessly bathetic essay designed to bring me the $100 prize.
I won. My essay got published for all to see. It was posted on the school's entrance hall.
Eventually, someone read it closely though. They noticed the message that I had encoded in my essay: taking the first letter of each word in my introductory paragraph, I had spelled out
Brown is a pederast
It took close to an hour to work that in. But when you're a skinny 9th grader with little social life to speak of, time isn't an obstacle. School was where I was a Viking!

Sylvester's post reminds me of when I won my own high school writing contest.
In 9th grade English
Mine was in 10th grade honors English.
It wound up being the highlight of my entire stay in that high school. Unless you include the fact that I hold the all-time record for never being on time at that school, and about six redheads that wouldn't leave me alone.

Bump, because there is still time to get matched up. Articles aren't due until the 10'th.
Remember, if you're a Pro, you're the easy girl at the dance; pick whoever you want, there's plenty of willing Am's.
(Now if only MY partner would answer YIM then we could get started on humiliating you all.)

I hadn't see the end of this thread, and had missed Jep's posts.
Thanks for the compliment, Jep. The Erika/Mr. Sir collaboration is outside of my normal genre of writing, though, so it will not have my normal "voice".
By the way, Erika told me that she thought you all write like third-graders, and she single-handedly would hand all of you your asses in this competition.**
I hope I'm not breaking a confidence by telling you all that she has written the funniest story of all time.
And Millie, thank you for being you.

I know its late in the game, but I don't suppose there'd be any way to extend the deadline to Saturday? Bankey and I were going to put something together until we realized the rules stipulated the AM needed to be somebody that's only been here for this year. However, upon further review, it would appear that that is not the case.
And rejection of this suggestion will result in an implication that we cannot be beaten.

I think that the deadline should be extended for all teams. As Chi said in another thread, he has hundreds of articles in the queue, and doesn't need any more shoved at him - we should wait until he, or whoever else will approve the articles, is ready.
... this would be for ChiChi's sake, of course, not our sake.

OFFICIAL RULES CHANGES
1) The "Joined in the last year." rule for Am's has been officially waived. (Almost no-one was paying attention to it anyways.) The only rule for Am's is now that they have not had an article published.
2) The deadline has been extended to Sunday June 12 at 23:59. This is to accomodate anyone who wants to take advantage of the above rule, and also because MY PARTNER DOESN'T RESPOND TO E-MAILS!!!!
Being as the Great and Powerful Oz of submission approval is still away (despite the apparent recent activities of the leet Chi Chi bot), it seems unlikely this will actually delay the contest judging any.
Thank you.
...
Also, you're all still going to lose, even if I have to register the washcloth under my bed as a new GABber and use it as my partner.
Again.

Quick question:
Does the the title of the article need to have something about "Pro-Am Contest" in it so ChiChi knows what it is?

The normal way to submit an article is to change the drop-down on the main page to display articles only, then scroll down to "submit a new article". Not sure if this contest has different rules. Might want to check with Demo on that.

Honestly, my vote is that the disqualification is fair. If it were anyone else but Demo this wouldn't even be being considered. It wasn't like it was a little bit late, it was almost two full days late. If anyone else had turned theirs in that late, they would be out without a doubt, and so Demo needs to be too.
Plus, I wanna win.

We didn't use extra time though. the reason that it's late is because I didn't write my part until the night before it was due, and sent it to him hours before it was due.
Do you know what unspeakable things I had to do to become Demo's teammate?? I won't take a shot in the mouth for nothing!

I reall shouldn't post this... but I think it will help clear up some confusion. Chi Chi and I had an IM conversation last week where we discussed the contest.
CapnDan: So, Chi Chi, how's Maine?
ChiChi1977: I read your article. It's so brilliant that reading it did permanent damage to my retinae.
CapnDan: Wow, thanks! BIG and I knew we had something good...
ChiChi1977: I'm submitting it to the Library of Congress.
CapnDan: That sounds excessive, Chi Chi, I wouldn't quite call it a modern classic just yet...
ChiChi1977: Shut up and make love to me.
CapnDan: Geez, that's rather forward. Okay, I guess.
ChiChi1977: After our two-week long bout of lovemaking, I'll reject the other articles.
