Offensive?
A comedy conversation by J.W.-with a bow on top 24,693 8
11/29/2005 01:43 PM 212 views

Here at my place of business- we are answering the phone "Happy Holidays, thank you for calling <insert company name>"

I fill in for the receptionist at lunch, so following protocol - I answered the phone in this jolly way. The man on the other end asked me if I was instructed by the company to answer the phone in this manner and he said that he was offended by it. He said that it was a very "left wing way of thinking" and that we shouldn't be pushing our "agenda" on our customers.

My reply..."uh, hold on one moment" and then I transferred him. WHAT THE HELL?

Presumably he found thought it was too PC that you said "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" or "Thank you for calling, Brother Christian!"

Therefore, it is likely that he's some nutty right-wing Christian. You should have replied, "Oh, I assumed you were Muslim. You sure sound Muslim."

I overheard customers at our store saying that they wouldn't shop anywhere this year where employees weren't allowed to say "Merry Christmas".

When I am finished ringing up customer purchases I say "Remember, Jesus is the reason for the season!"

I think people are just looking to be offended anymore.

Being a Christian, i wish people a "Happy day chosen to represent the birth of Christ".

But i expect a Jew to wish me a happy Hanukkah, a pagan to wish me a good winter solstice, etc.

If the day means something to them, i am happy the wish me a good one, whatever it is. Except the "I wish you would die day". I am not a big fan of that one.

It's Frost-ing Christmas you Frost-ing Frosts. Let me have my damn (granted druidic) Christmas tree and my (once again winter solstice pre-empted) Christmas break. The baby Jesus gets a birthday too (granted it was probably in the spring but hey...).

I couldn't care less if I "offend" someone. Insulting is another story, usually meant to upset but offend is some recently developed "left wing conspiracy" word meant solely to remove the word God from our vocabulary and teach our kids that the American flag can be used as an excuse to stay home from school.

On another note, Jill is "second in command receptionist" which means she's at the bottom of the totem pole and probably poor.

If were talking about a place of business, I think it's appropriate to say something like "Happy Holidays" rather than saying only "Merry Christmas," "Happy Hanukkah," or "Kwazy Kwanzaa."

But I do believe that instead of taking away every holiday from schools, in hopes they don't offend someone, they should have Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, or whatever other holiday people celebrate this time of year, decorations put up.

School is about learning about the world, and like it or not, there is religion in the world, and several different kinds too!

I agree Ollie.

When i was in highschool they gave the schools a choice to remove prayer, or include other religions.

The one school i attended did a different reading every morning from a different religion. It was great.

It was difficult to stay awake during Secular Humanism days though.

The safest way to answer the phone while substituting for the normal receptionist during the holiday season is as follows:

Rules:

1. Always let phone ring 3 times.

2. Burp loudly as you answer, pause, and then say "excuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzze me."

3. Then say "For your correct holiday greeting, push, no wait, YOU ARE CALLER #473. Ah Shakespeare, you just won a trip to Disneyland."

4. "For more information, hangup, and call back when the regular bitch is answering the phone."

Sorry to jump back on topic...They are taking the Pharmacy Administrative Group holiday picture tomorrow. Well, actually, I am taking it. But anyway, they put it on a card, and send one to everyone in the department. They were arguing on whether to put "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings." It's a big 'PC' battle. They asked my opinion, and I said

How about "Happy December. We're not allowed to say anything else in fear of a lawsuit."

They didn't like that answer.
