Advice on Writing Needed (Shut up, Al)

I'm writing a story that's going to be about 35,000 words when I complete it. It's like to make it better and longer, then try to get it published as a novel. The thing is, I don't really know much about writing novels. The action sequences and plot are really good, I've been told, but I need to learn how to pace things better and develop the characters.

Ideally, I'd like someone to reccomend a good book on novel writing. Alternately, a couple of Internet links would be good. Didn't one of you guys actually get a novel published or something?

Steven King came out with a book on writing a couple years ago. I think it was called "On Writing".

Figure out who else writes the same type of story and look up who their agents are. You won't get very far without an agent - lots of publishing houses don't read the pieces sent in cold. They don't have time. So an agent is a must.

Seriously, there have to be writer's forums or user groups all over the Internet that you can get advice from others that are doing the same thing as you are or already have.

I'm doing a writing course at uni and I'm a Frost-ing awesome action writer, but I'm not going to help you because the moment you get help with telling the story, it stops being your story and becomes MY story. I don't want my name put to your juvenile drivel.

What's to know? You either can do it or not. Just like sex. O.K., that's not really true.

Every author has a different technique. It doesn't seem like it is something that can be taught. I suppose there are some practical things a person should know, but I imagine writing is like any other art form--if you really have it in you, you just write until the book is done.

Being a good writer isn't the same as being an author.

But what do I know? Nothing. Really, I'm full of Shakespeare.

I agree with Chit, you may be able to find a writer's forum to give you some pointers. Good luck.

A certain amount of it is natural talent and imagaination, but some of the more technical things such as structure and pace can be taught. Generally they aren't easy to learn though, so natural ability in those things is also a big advantage.

If you do anything other than heavy drinking, drug usage and wanton sex in preparation for being a novelist, your stuff will suck.

1. Writers who write good always throw the reader for a loop with an unexpected surprise. In random paragraphs insert phrases like: Sylvia lay sick among the silverware; Then the fireplace flew south for the winter; and watch out for South America the sleeping giant on your back doorstep. End every chapter with: I would write more, but suddenly I am hit by a bus.

Oh, and I'll stop asking for advice on this site when John Hoorgrave asks me to, not before.

I didn't tell you to stop asking for advice, I just like giving you Shakespeare about it when you do.
