Electronic chanter!



Pipers learn/practise on a practise chanter. Just like you described, but without the cord. It is has a reed, which is usually a lot softer than the reed in the bagpipe chanter.



The electronic chanter doesn't have the reed, you don't even have to blow it usually. It has sensors for your fingers. You can tune it, add the drone sounds, even change the volume. You can even use headphones.

that looks like a recorder (remember those from Middle School?) with a cord coming out the bottom. He hold in about waist level, plays it like pipes, and it SOUNDS a lot like pipes

It was this one Ditdah, and he's a hella nice guy. As it's basically a synthesizer, it can be changed to play most sounds that you could get out of a piano based synth as well though most stick with woodflutes and tin whistles when away from the bagpipe.



And it's much easier than micing a set of great pipes.



And yes, the headphones are a godsend. I can sit on the front porch and practice without disturbing all the neighborhood dogs.
