We moved home about 4 months ago to a bigger house in the 'burbs. Front-yard, back-yard, gardens etc. We are surrounded by huge, well established trees. We also have a family of 3 ringtail possums living in the large eucalyptus tree in our backyard. Sunday last week my wife found one sitting on the kitchen table eating from our fruit bowl. It took 20 minutes to catch it and get it back outside. It tried to bite me and pissed all over my leg.

Nature sucks.

It has a 13 course basement (whatever that means). There's not much natural light down there, though. Just a couple of glass block windows, and they're maybe 16 x 20 inches (I'm guessing here).

As far as landscaping goes, Declan can plan and dream all he wants, but I believe that landscaping is something you should hire people to do, and won't even cut the grass myself. I will build a deck and a turtle pond, and probably install a jacuzzi, in the backyard, though, and I'll do that work myself.

I'll post more pics when we actually get the keys.

Congrats on your new house! The only pictures I have of the place we just moved into are older; I should probably take some new ones, but then I'd have to actually clean. But I love my house and I'm glad I got the opportunity to boot my ex out and move my new husband in.

SCB, I love your deck! We have 2 porches and a back deck, but they're empty right now. We had a windstorm this weekend so all of our outdoor furniture is now in the barn.

Oh, here's a more recent picture - you can see our new windows as well as the ugly storm door that needs to be replaced. I wish I had a newer home - mine was built in the 1860s, which means half the dead bodies in the basement aren't mine. But the shutters actually open and close, so that's not too bad of a trade-off. It's not like the corpses complain.

In lots of places in the U.S., the people who run emergency services figure out how the houses should be numbered. There are six houses on my street and we're number 2738. They say I'll be grateful if I ever need to call for an ambulance.

And to answer your question about the street grid, I don't think house numbers have anything to do with that. Our entire town has 3800 people, not even close to that many houses or roads.

13 courses is how many rows of block there are in the foundation. I think 10 is average, 13 would allow for taller people to stand upright.

You should talk to the builder though. It seems they forgot to add a chimney.

Here's my back yard. I really don't have one. My neighbor's back yard is behind my house.

I haven't trimmed the weeds on my patio because I know it irritates my neighbor.

Here's my house from across the street. See how my chimney is falling apart? A stonemason left his card on my front door the other day. By the way, I did not paint my house pinkish-purple. It was that color when I bought it.

My house was built in the 1840s, but I think it was originally a barn that was converted into a house.

Here is the main street of my town.

My town has a scarecrow contest every year. I went to the bakery today and this was sitting next to the front door. I found it disturbing. It seems to be made out of food--it's face is a squash.

Here is a view up my street and down my street. Sorry the pictures are blurry.
