What about rather than retiring the tooth icon (which will not mean squat to anyone new - it just won't be there), you put Leppy's face over it like that one with that other guy that I can never remember what his name is. Jim Petry?

Retire the tooth.

Redesign the tooth so it has his name on it.

Make the tooth a special icon that you can unlock if you pay a fee to use it, kind of like a king or queen for a month. The money could go to paying for hamster feed around here.

I don't think creating him a custom icon is a good idea because we don't know what he'd truly want. We also don't know if the family wants his face all over Gab as an icon. Let's just retire the tooth.

Not quite. Leave the tooth icon on the icon selection page, but with no check box and a little message. "In memoriam." or "Are you Leppy? No. You are not Leppy. Only Leppy was Leppy."

That way new people will always see the curious little note and ask about it, and the veterans will fill them in and reminisce. That seems like a nice way to keep him in the sites memory.

I definately like Chris's Idea. There is a pencil portrait of him, copies exist on HoB and I'm sure will make it to the memorial site that is excellent also.

There have been relationships formed on here, marraiges, births and now, sadly... a death. I think the dedication to him in the book would be a GREAT idea as it truely defines what an affect this site has had on the people who post here.

I also like the idea of the custom icon in memoriam... what about the TOOTH icon with the text "leppy" on it and if people want to donate to the charity of choice, they get to use it.

I know that John just took out the birth years out of our profiles, but I think he should put Leppy's birth-death in his profile with an appropriate "In Memory Of" or something similar. There should be something in his profile for posterity. I'll leave that for better minds and better friends to decide what's best.

Forcing everyone to use the tooth icon for a day would be kind of cool. You could also add "[RIP Leppy]" behind everyone's name where they post that day.

As bad as the immediate situation is, this has got me thinking about the whole situation in general.

It might suck to think about it, but chances are that Leppy won't be the last person to die on the board whilst being an active GABber and whatever is put in place should really be applicable to all future cases as well.

I'm not sure if the suggestions are to customise the tooth icon and release it for general selection or simply to attach it to Leppy's account (both options seem to have been intimated at). A general release of the icon would eventually see us with a lack of icons to actually customise unless you plan on running the new one alongside the old one. Attaching it to Leppy's account would work but, since it wouldn't restrospectively apply to the posts that he's made, it would require actively seeking the account out in order the view the icon and associated wording. This would work, but I think it would be quite nice to actually display his memory to the populace at large as well as the people who knew him.

Another option (and this would require buy-in from John) would be to create an 'In memory' page with a link to the various user's accounts on it. There could also be a link to a thread on it in which people could pay their respects. An article type thread could suffice for this as it should be something that needs approval before it can be created, but I think it might almost be worth creating a new thread type which wouldn't actually appear on the main board, only in the memory page (to decrease the chances of spam posts and random abuse).

Just my two cents.

I think Nachos up there has a point. It is indeed very sad that Leppy has died. But he will not be the last person to die on GAB. And it doesn't make any sense to start changing the site or retiring icons, because we would eventually run out of things to change or icons to retire. The idea of a memorial page is nice, because it can be added to without changing the rest of the site.

I'm not heartless. I'm just saying that it doesn't make sense to change things like the icon or the main paige because someone died. I'm sorry, but we're not immortal. We will eventually die. And we can't expect John to retire an icon every time it happens. Al would have to draw more to replace them. And then what happens when Al dies?

Oh, and Declan, I'm now telling the little one that Whistler is his favorite McManus brother.

This was actually gonna be my suggestion, too.

The way I see it.. people die every day. Yes, this time it was a GABber, but that doesn't make it any more important than any other death (except for crack whores and politicians).

As for a way of memorializing him "globally" on the site, or in some way so that people who join in the future will be able to find information about who he was... don't take this personally, but that's one of the lamest things I've ever heard.

Yes, some of you knew him quite well both on and off the board and I respect that, but as far as this site is concerned he was just another name with an icon.

No need to yell and scream.. I already know I'm a heartless bastard.. but seriously, I think some of you are making too much of this.

Mourn him if you wish, but I see no need to forever alter the site in honor of him.

... my $.02...

If they want to retire icons and change the main page (which I had thought was supposed to be a temporary thing?) or whatever, let them do it. It may not matter a hill of beans to people that didn't care about Leppy, but it matters to those who did. And yeah, other people on this site are gonna die, but this is the first one. Who says we have to treat the next death in the same way? Even if we do treat it the same way, this board is so organic that years from now it will look nothing like it does today anyway, so retired icons and altering the main page is only part of the changing process.

I'm thinking the above paragraph made no sense. Let me sum up. The GABbers who want to mourn Leppy should get to mourn him in the way they most see fit. As far as when the next GABber dies, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Jesus, Leppy died, and that sucks, but this is still a comedy website. Stop taking Shakespeare seriously

Just as a clarification, I was not bitching because juan linked to the "Chickens is dead" thread. I have no problem with making jokes about Leppy or his death, because that's what he did here. Make jokes. He'd expect it.

I just am generally sick of Juan. He's a Frost-ing tard who can't make a joke for Shakespeare, has no idea how to fit in, and posts random crap that pops in his brain even when it has no comedic value and nothing to do with the topic. I am usually nice to n00bs, and try and help them fit in here. But he's been around long enough to get the idea. He acts like a 13-year-old retard who's been off his meds for a month.

I can hate him if I want. So nyah-nyah-nyah.

Maybe we could retire the tooth, but add a new icon. I get that if we retire an icon every time someone dies eventually we're going to run out, but if we add a new one each time one is retired, we will effectively maintain an adequate icon:gabber ratio.
