This reminds me almost exactly of a situation my uncle had with a girl he still refers to as the "love of his life"



He was overseas working for an extended period and he met a young local woman. She was not only beautiful, but one of the only people around other than his coworkers who spoke English fluently. They started spending time together every day and clearly were becoming affectionate, but of course there was no physical expression of their feelings due to the cultural standards of the area.



Eventually he professed his love for her, and to his great joy she felt the same about him. Although he was a pretty ordinary guy to most standards to her he was this exciting and witty American. She was hooked.



Alas, there was no way, she explained, that her family would ever accept a white man, especially an American, as a suitable match for their daughter. My uncle was determined though. He tried to ingratiate himself with her father. He brought gifts to the family. Did chores, made repairs to their home for them, anything he could think of to show that he was a good person and a capable man and provider. Unfortunately, although they showed him respect for his attempts, there was just no way.



So with a heavy heart my Uncle accepted their decision, knowing his love would never go against her father. He made a false report back to CentCom that the village was abetting gorilla troops and hiding arms and medical supplies for the enemy. After his love's family was gunned down and the village burned and bulldozed flat he at last went to his love, unencumbered by cultural mores or family wishes, and took his turn with her.
