Did you know that's actually caused by a parasite? The adult form of inhabits the intestines of birds, often herons. The worm's eggs are defecated by the bird. They'll hatch if they land in water. The larva swims until it finds a snail. Inside the snail, it metamorphosis into a form that produces juvenile worms. These find tadpoles and enter the developing limb buds, becomine cysts. They interfere with the frog's development, causing it to grow deformed. These deformities make it more likely to be eaten, often by a heron. Back inside the heron, the parasite grows to adulthood and lays more eggs, restarting the cycle.
