Road signs, Part Deux
A comedy article by Heyoka 1,000 9

Fellow funny-folk, I've gone and done it again. I guess I just can't help myself.

After my last prank where I reprogrammed electronic road signs, I was once again confronted with meaningless and unsecured highway signs.

THE SITUATION: Two readily-accessible electronic road signs in my area, with long-expired messages about some sort of census beginning in mid-October (and why ANYone would want to put something like that on a road sign, considering how much they cost to rent, is beyond me).

THE REMEDY: A little creative reprogramming, taking full advantage of the unlocked control compartment and freely-available password written in (you guessed it) black Sharpie on the inside of the door.

THE RESULT: Twofold, actually. The first sign looked so lonely out on this empty rural road, I just had to do something about it.

The other one was starting to malfunction even as I was tweaking it. My guess is that the batteries were beginning to go. What else could I put up there but...

I might have gotten rain-soaked, but it was worth it!

Happy travels.

Who wants to bet that those signs will remain unlocked, but they will soon be equipped with pepper spray?

Did this spend a year in limbo? Chi Chi really needs to approve these things faster.

Actually, it gets better. As it turns out, the census the signs were blabbing about was, apparently, still in progress. I found this out when I went to check on things a day or so later.

Both signs had been reset back to the blurb about the census, but with a bit of a twist. The first panel said (placename removed for anonymity) CITY CENSUS, and the second one said 'THRU NOVEMBER THANKS.'

I'm guessing that whoever did the reconfiguration knows that signs in this area are considered fair targets if the message appears non-current, and programmed accordingly.

I will, of course, leave the things alone through the end of November. BUT -- If they're still up and running on December 1st, they're fair game, and I've got lots of other nice little quotes in mind...

Keep the peace(es).

It's a great idea. Too bad they don't use them here, or least the ones that I work on in my shop don't have any of the programmable messages.
