It was a cold, bitter winter in Maryland when my parents decided to send me off to Illinois with my cousin. We were going to spend Christmas with one of our aunts who had just come to America.

We drove. I slept for most of the trip in the backseat, waking up only to eat or go to the bathroom.

They lived in a trailer park. Their home was larger than I expected, and it was kept rather neat and tidy. Overall it was a rather cozy and comfortable stay.

Like this one but smaller and colder.

Now this aunt of mine is a Vietnamese woman in her 50's. She lived in France but had just married some lonely Vietnamese man my other aunt found so that she could become a US Citizen. Also, she brought her zaftig French-Vietnamese daughter who was my age.

So we hung out. Her English was shaky and her Vietnamese wasn't too much better, but we found ways to communicate. On the eve of Christmas Eve, we were hanging out in her room when she went over to her bed. Then, she turned around slowly.

It was furry and larger then I expected it to be. I asked her if I could hold it.

After I held it in my hands, it started to scream. The mouth opened and its crimson tongue shook with the sound of the shriek. It's opened its eyes to reveal bright sapphire irises and deep black pupils.

I let go of it and my cousin ran to find her new father to fix it for her. She came back and told me that he took the batteries out.

I never played with Furbies again.

It only spoke French.
