Did you know that you can now buy other people's private cell phone records online?
Imagine someone being able to purchase a record of every cell phone call you've made over the last year -- every call to your therapist, pastor, bookie, drug dealer, parole officer, or prospective Russian mail-order bride. (And that was just my cell phone record from last week.)

According to this Washington Post article, it's ultimately the cell phone carriers who are to blame. Often someone on the inside can be bribed into selling the cell phone records to an outside company. Sometimes you can just call up and pretend like you're someone else, and their lousy security measures will let you through.

Maybe if the cell companies had a GIANT MAGNIFYING GLASS, their security would be a little tighter.
It's time someone complained to the cell phone carriers about this practice, and that someone is going to be you.
For our June contest, here's your comedy challenge: ask your cellphone carrier why they're allowing other companies to sell your private cell phone records, and then post your e-mail or phone conversation here. We'll be offering $250.00 in cash prizes to the funniest back-and-forth between ZUG patriots and mindless customer service robots.
To get you started, here's contact info for the top 3 American cell providers:
- Verizon customer support
- AT&T customer support
- Sprint customer support
Here are the contest guidelines:
- The phone or e-mail conversation must be true.
- Your article should not be published elsewhere on the Web.
- Please begin your title with the words "CELL PHONE RECORDS:" so we can filter the contest entries.
To enter, just submit your article to ZUG Live and let our comedy community do the rest. At the end of the month, we'll award the two funniest-rated articles cash prizes of $125.00 each. Contest ends at 11:59 pm ET, June 30, 2009.
Thanks to our sponsor CellPhoneRegistry.org for the idea.
UPDATE: Congratulations to our winners: Bayan Rabbani and Bill the Squirrel!

For those otherwise uninformed of the ZUG civil disobedience process, this is basically how it breaks down:
- Issue comes to light
- Four years passes
- "It's time someone complained..."
