These Are Not the Top 5 Internet Hoaxes of All Time

ABC News ran a piece on The Top 5 Website Hoaxes of All Time, in the form of an interview with Alex Boese over at the great MuseumofHoaxes.com. But you have to wonder about the criteria for the "Top 5" list that they compiled:

1. The Blair Witch Project
2. Boilerplate: The Victorian Era Robot
3. Bonsai Kitten
4. ManBeef
5. DowEthics.com

Some of these definitely deserve Hall of Fame status. For the young'uns who weren't around for the Web campaign behind the 1999 horror movie The Blair Witch Project, it was an incredibly effective piece of viral marketing. And Bonsai Kitten fooled thousands of animal lovers into fits of protest and outrage, which is always good for a laugh.

But has anyone ever heard of the fictional 19th-century robot Boilerplate (besides hardcore robotics hoaxing geeks)? And DowEthics.com is clever, but Top 5?

Where is lonelygirl15? Or the Bill Gates Wants to Give You Money chain letter? Or the story about Steve Jobs getting a liver transplant? (Whoops, sorry. Real news item there.)

Read the entire article here, and share your thoughts below on other great Internet hoaxes that should have made the list.

9/11: 19 persons with cutters hijack airplanes. One of them, bad pilot, still alive, drives perfectly and rushes into a hyper-supervised target without beiing stopped.

haha.
