College students pay thousands of dollars to learn, but one of the most important lessons of college is free: when you leave for the weekend, don't leave your door unlocked. Sadly, too many students don't learn this lesson until it's too late. They return back to campus to find their room filled with balloons or newspaper, or every square inch covered in aluminum foil or pictures of penises. Even worse, sometimes their room is no longer there, since it has been switched with another room, or moved to the bathroom.

These are amusing dorm room pranks, but occasionally students will break through with something so unique and ambitious that their achievements must be recognized. And so we bring you the valedictorians of pranking: here are the Top 3 Best Dorm Room Pranks of All Time.

1) Operation rilleM. When Brandeis University senior Aaron Miller went out of town for a graduate school interview, he returned to find his world had been turned upside-down ... literally.

His friend and roommate Alex Asen, with the aid of many friends and subcontractors, used concrete anchors, screws, and angle brackets to anchor the furniture to the ceiling. What makes this the Best Dorm Room Prank of All Time is the attention to detail. Very few pranksters will go to the trouble of laying ceiling tiles on the floor, and carpeting the ceiling. Note the upside-down window shade, and the brilliantly engineered clothes hangers and books:

Asen planned ahead, leaving enough time to get perspective-bending photos of everyone posing in Miller's new room before he came back.

Best of all, when Miller came back and discovered the stunt, he laughed as hard as anyone. Dorm room pranks just don't get any more perfect.

2) Insane CU Campus Tour. It was supposed to be just another campus tour. But when the University of Colorado tour guide opened the door to show a group of prospective students and parents a typical dorm room on the CU campus, instead of finding the typical "show room" set aside for tours, she found a student sleeping in the bed.

"Who are you?" she asked the student.

"I'm so confused right now," he said, scratching his head.

So was the tour guide. It was definitely the most unusual campus tour in college history, starting off with two students washing each other in the public fountain, followed by a gorilla chasing a screaming woman, a student puking milk, another student wearing a tutu and riding a razor scooter, a girl peeing her pants, and many other pranks, strung together into one long campus tour of insanity.

An incredibly ambitious prank, the Insane CU Campus Tour was a collaboration between dozens of students, including two "moles" pretending to be high school seniors taking the tour. They filmed footage from the perspective of the tour group, at least until one of them was inexplicably kidnapped by screaming female fans at the end of the tour.

We're guessing most of the families on the tour that day crossed CU off their list.

3) The Walled-In Room. This prank, pulled at LeTourneau University in Texas, was notable not only for its scope, but also its target. After all, not many college students have the balls to prank their R.A. -- especially by building a solid wall of cinderblocks in his dorm room.

While most pranksters would be content with just stacking the cinderblocks, these guys went to the trouble of using mortar to create an impenetrable barrier. Thoughtfully, they left a tiny opening at the top, so their R.A. could climb a ladder and access his room.

You get the sense that this R.A. is not fully in control of his students.

Thoughtfully, the pranksters gave their R.A. a hammer and putty knife to chisel the wall apart. In the process, he taught his students a valuable lesson about breaking down the walls that separate them, by, you know, breaking down a wall that separated them.

So there you have it: the Top 3 Best Dorm Room Pranks we've found. Do you know of a dorm room prank we haven't found? Post it below!

While not so much of a dorm room prank, I once had a very annoying roomate while in college. When he wasn't being an obnoxious douchebag, he had an array of phobias. One phobia in particular he had was of spiders. Even daddy long legs sent him running. Myself and my other two roomates started pranking him by putting spider pictures in unexpected locations (in cupboards, as a computer wallpaper, in his car) just to freak him out in hopes he would move out.

For the final act in our prank I bought the largest tarantula I could find from the pet store and let it sit in the bathtub overnight. When he pulled back the curtain, there was Mr. Eight Legs staring right at him. He completely flipped out, turned to run out the door, forgot the door was closed, ran face first into it, and crumpled into a whimpering mess on the floor (and by mess, I mean he pissed himself).

He moved out the next day.

I still have the tarantula by the way. Look at how harmless it is.

Going to college in the tiny state of Vermont often left many students bored at my university. Pranks were always plentiful. Due to the fact that all the dorms were heated by steam-powered radiators, one prank was rather common. As winter set in, we would sneak into the rooms of the people that hadn't learned to lock their doors and unscrew the metal grate covering the radiator pipes. We would then place an open can of tuna or anchovies on the heating element and screw the metal back on the radiator. Within a week, the room would be nearly uninhabitable.

Shouldn't University of Colorado be UC?

I think the actual name of the college IS Colorado University. It must be altitude-induced dyslexia.

We pulled a pretty solid prank on a coworker last year. Sadly it was an office prank and not a dorm prank, but it was pretty good none-the-less.

I'd like to copy and paste it here, but there's a 350 word limit, so a link to the full story will have to suffice.

http://sesquipedalis.blogspot.com/2009/02/liang-prank.html

The basics were:
1. Filling an office with packing peanuts.
2. Stealing his stuffed bunny and leaving ransom notes around the office.
3. An automatic nerf gun and copy of "Never Gonna Give You Up" in a tape deck set to go off when the door opened.
4. Replacing all technology with old Apple tech from the 80's/90's
5. We placed a webcam inside the office and broadcast it to the entire office. Unfortunately the footage didn't come out too well.

The picture set can be found here.

The dorm I lived in as a college freshman was always overheated. Everyone left their windows cracked to keep from suffocating. Someone who lived in a first floor room went home for the weekend and left the window cracked. Some enterprising kids made snowman component parts out on the lawn, then passed them in the window and assembled a snowman family in the room. It was really lovely.

Once the pattern was set, anyone who went away with their window cracked was pranked. Even higher floors weren't exempt once someone found out where the maintenance guys kept their ladders. One weekend a couple of guys piled into a second floor romm and glued some rubber flashing around the bottom of the door to make the room watertight. They ran a hose from the janitor's closet out one of the nearby windows and into the room and filled it about a foot deep with hot water. Then they dumped in a couple of cases of Jell-O mix.

The guy came home to find himself shin deep in green jello.

In my mom's dorm there were a pair of women who shared a room. It was good they were together, because they were both notoriously messy. As in pizza box and soda can in knee-deep debris messy.

They were both gone one weekend, so everyone got together, got in somehow, and cleaned the room spotless. Everyone hid down the hall to watch them return, which they did, separately.

The first one got back, opened her door, wandered in, wandered back out again, checked the number and floor and stuff, and wandered back in, dumbfounded. She finally figured out (or perhaps they finally let on) that it was a prank. After everyone had a good laugh, she asked if she could hide, too, awaiting the roommate's return.

Sure enough, the other roommate arrived and had much the same reaction, coming right back out to check the room number before connecting that maybe she was in the right place and it was her own, clean room.

Both Cal Tech and MIT have a tradition of pranking though their pranks are not limited to dorm rooms. It has evolved into a competition. Two of the most famous pranks are when "Caltech students succeeded in altering the University of Washington,,,s halftime flip-card routine during the 1961 Rose Bowl in order to read 'CALTECH'." And at MIT, "One hack involved a police car with its warning lights running. The unusual aspect of this hack was its position,”on top of MIT's Great Dome. The car was found to be a gutted, junked, heavy Chevrolet, painted meticulously to match the MIT Campus Police patrol cars. The car's number was pi. Its license plate read "IHTFP", the abbreviation for MIT's unofficial slogan. A dummy dressed as a campus patrolman was seated inside with a box of donuts."
