Mark Malkoff's Keys to the City Tour, Part 3
A comedy article by John Hargrave | 10/13/2009 06:42 PM | 1568 views
Comedian/filmmaker Mark Malkoff has a mission: to get 100 Keys to the City in 28 days [read our intro here]. If he achieves his goal, he has been promised a key to New York City. In return for his key, Mark must perform some menial or degrading community service at each town.

Here are the highlights from the last few days.

Clifton, VA. Trying to further his grassroots campaign to Save Clifton Elementary School, Mayor Tom Peterson made Mark dress up as a giant ice cream cone. (Not sure how this saves the school, but it certainly shows the limited career options if you don't go to elementary school.)

Portsmouth, VA. For helping out in the city mail room, Mark receives a Key to the City and a signed copy of Esquire from Dr. James W. Holley III, who was featured as one of America's best-dressed mayors. (This is what Esquire calls "political coverage.")

Hampton, VA. Mayor Molly Joseph Ward presented Mark with the largest key to date, a five-foot collage of keys made by students at the Machen Elementary School. (Now this is a mayor that thinks big.) In return, Mark had to answer questions from the kids, like "Didn't you smell bad after living in IKEA for a month?"

Durham, NC. The children at the Edison Johnson Recreation Center made Mark an enormous welcome banner, and in return, he had to play a little pickup basketball with them before receiving his key from Mayor Bill Bell.

Brunswick, GA. In return for his key from Mayor Bryan Thompson, Mark had to judge the annual "Stewbilee's Pooch Parade," filled with insane costumes, like this dog that was dressed up like an astronaut.

Tampa, FL. After receiving the key from Mayor Pam Iorio, Mark spent an afternoon coloring with the kids at the Metropolitan Ministries After School Program, which got a little out of hand.

Mark is currently up to 28 keys, but can he keep up this breakneck pace? Stay tuned to find out.
