Comedian Mark Malkoff is on a quest to get 100 Keys to the City in 28 days [read our intro here]. If he pulls it off, he has been promised a key to the city of New York. We're following his hilarious trek around the country; here are recent highlights.
Chattanooga, TN. Mayor Ron Littlefield has a sense of humor, commanding Mark to clean out the monkey cage at the Chattanooga Zoo before awarding him a key to the city:
Unfortunately, Mark did not escape without a souvenir of zoo poo:
Shelbyville, TN/Tullahoma, TN. Mayor Troy Bisby was the first mayor to present two keys: one for Tullahoma, and another in place of Shelbyville Mayor Ewing Cartwright, who could not make it.
In return, Mark (who is afraid of heights) had to do some maintenance to the city's power lines.
Hazelwood, MO. In exchange for helping prepare with the 2010 Census, Mark received a key to Hazelwood from Mayor Matthew Robinson.
And was then shocked to watch his child helper Logan also receive a key to the city.
Palatine, IL. In exchange for helping shovel mulch at the city dump, Mark receives his first edible key: a chocolate Key to the City from Mayor Jim Schwantz. (Palatine, IL, ironically, is predominantly white.)
Naperville, IL. Mayor George Pradel, whom Mark describes as "a cross between Boss Hogg and Mr. Potter from It's a Wonderful Life," presents Mark with a key to the city. In exchange, Mark has to wear a ridiculous top hat and act as a town crier from the top of the city tower. But who wouldn't want to cry for a town with this mayor?
Mark has now passed the halfway point, receiving over 50 keys! As the month ticks down, can he get to 100? Stay tuned to find out.
