Nowhere is the principle of evolution more observable than in the pile of forgotten printouts that surround communal printers in today's workplace. These orphaned documents have many possible origins -- people send a file to the wrong printer, send multiple copies, or forget that they have printed something in the first place -- but their fate is largely the same. After a brief, brutish existence next to the printer, they wind up in the recycle bin.

Documents that are eye-catching or seemingly important tend to stay around a little longer, getting set off to the side instead of going straight to the bin.
