Prangsgrup's Mike Barry makes a fool of himself for our amusement.
For many, college is a chance to party. For some, it's a chance to learn. And for the enterprising, college is a chance to prank those who are trying to learn (and their ambiguously evil deans). Many schools have even developed their own signature pranksters: MIT has "hackers," Harvard has the Lampoon, and Caltech has amateurs.
For Columbia in the early double-aughts, the campus pranksters of note were Prangstgrup. Here are three of their best.
In German, Prangstgrup literally means "Wary Beaver"
1. Lecture Musical
What Prangstgrup does best is music, and "Lecture Musical" is probably their most famous stunt. The song is catchy and funny, and it took an entire Orgo class by surprise. And I don't care who you are, if you get up mid-lecture and start singing, you have balls. (Unless you are singing very, very high. Then you probably don't have balls.)
2. Library Musical
If your idea of a prank is breaking into Broadway-style song and dance for an unsuspecting audience, the library makes sense as a stage. But how do you make sure all the seats are full? Do it during finals, of course!
3. Startup Sound
If your idea of a prank is NOT breaking into Broadway-style song and dance, well, the library is still a pretty good spot. Remember when I wrote "college is a chance to prank those who are trying to learn"? Observe:
Prangstgrup no longer operates; its members have all graduated, and its existence is relegated to a few stray YouTube clips and a website, unchanged for the past five years. In other words, the name is available. Nab it up and get pranking!
