Muhalo CEO Calacanis contemplates his next media prank
Mega-successful tech entrepreneur Jason Calacanis pranked a collection of (HAHAHA) NEWS outlets into believing that the new Apple iPad did everything except perform fellatio with a series of fake Twitter posts on the eve of Apple's iPad announcement (read posts from the bottom).

The Wall Street Journal, CNN Money, Business Insider, and even CrunchGear ate up the bogus tweets like starved orphans in a candy factory, as they apparently forgot that "journalists" are supposed to verify stuff before they run it. Especially when the stuff they're running as "news" shouldn't have fooled most special education kids.
Among the claims that Calacanis tweeted were that the iPad had solar panels for recharging, front and back cameras for videoconferencing, a personal video recorder, face and thumbprint recognition, and the comic coup de gras: the "custom farmville app is insane." And in case ANYONE missed the first Farmville joke, he then tweeted: "Also, Farmville for Apple tablet is a huge game changer."
(For those not familiar with "Farmville," it's a popular Facebook game. About farming. No explosions. No NBA players with hookers and guns. Just. Farming. I Shakespeare you not.)

Even the Special Ed kids knew there would be no Farmville app
And in case the press still didn't get it, his final tweet was this: "Off to bed, but I assure you I'm not joking and the specs are real.... Most of all that this is best gadget ever made and NOT over-hyped."
Maybe he should have winked a couple of times, showed a picture of crossed fingers, or written "I AM LYING" in blood on his forehead.
To make matters even worse, the Wall Street Journal actually wrote in their article: "At this stage, we have no way of verifying if what Calacanis says is true."
As Perry White used to say to Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen all the time: "Then don't run it, you Frost-ing morons!"

Gawker details the tweets, the offending "news" outlets, and the nitwit organizations that re-printed them -- after thinking about it -- here.

"Wow. It makes waffles too?"
Finally, Steve Jobs presented the real iPad, which by comparison was now about as sexy as unbuttered toast.

Calicanis is one of the most controversial figures on the Web, and may have traded in his entire media reputation on this one prank. But: Farmville?!

I thought Plankton's first name was Sheldon.
I never understood the lure of Farmville. And I had to block all of the invitations, because they were pissing me off. I bet if I started playing it, I might end up as addicted as some people seem to be. Probably not.

Two words of note from the connected page "attentionmongering" and "trolling". I think I found my new favorite word.
