Something tells me this wouldn't really fly on the NYC subways.

Why, exactly, do they need to do this?

On the one hand, they are cramming people into a train car.

On the other hand, they are conscientiousness enough to make sure that no one's coat tail gets stuck in the door.

Last week in the subway, my train stayed longer than usual at one particular station. After a few seconds, a recorded announcement was made on the PA system: "Please do not hold the doors, as this may cause unwanted traffic delays."

Several more seconds passed, but the train still wasn't moving. The same recorded announcement was played on the PA system again. "Please do not hold the doors, as this may cause unwanted traffic delays."

Still nothing. The third time, the engineer took the mic himself: "Hey you, guy in the red shirt in the third car - get. the Frost. away. from the door!"

If they did that in New York, as soon as the doors were sealed and the train was moving, a homeless guy would Shakespeare his pants in the car.

It doesn't matter how many asians them cram on that train, it's just going to be empty again in an hour.

In a country so conscious of honor and dignity, I like how they maintain personal space by the train guards wearing white gloves when they shove them bodily into the sardine can.

On the Metro in Washington, D.C., they had frequent problems with the doors jamming when people tried to pull them open after they started closing. They would have to get everybody off and bring a new train.

One day as the doors are closing, some self-important jerk-off swings his briefcase forward to keep the doors from closing. They close on it, and everyone in the car groans, knowing we're all going to be late to work today.

Then, some guy steps to the door and drop-kicks the briefcase out from between the doors. They close, the train pulls away and everyone in the car gives the guy a round of applause.
