Students Banned From Graduation for Most Harmless Prank Ever

Pranks have led to many high school students being barred from graduation ceremonies, and to be honest, a lot of those students deserved it. When your "joke" can be better described as "vandalism" or "low-grade terrorism," you should learn there are consequences. But then there are times when the school staff are the jerks.

That's the case in Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, where several junior year students were prohibited from attending the graduation ceremony, because they were wearing "Senior 2011" T-shirts.

NOOOOOOOO!!!

If you understand school even a bit (and are therefore more qualified than the staff of Dennis-Yarmouth), you'll realize that wearing a "Class of 2011" T-shirt to the Class of 2010 ceremony is barely a prank. In fact, it shows ambition, an understanding of basic mathematics, and a determination to graduate. You couldn't conceive of a keener prank without sneaking into the library at night to study the textbooks.

Unfortunately, principal Ken Jenks disagreed, saying, "As you might imagine, there's often friendly competition and pranks, [between juniors and seniors] ... but as time progressed, we heard from students that people were using markers on people's cars, and eggs and syrup. That's the kind of vandalism that inflames other people."

Right, that's the kind of vandalism. BUT NOT WEARING A T-SHIRT.

We're all for school administrators wanting to protect students from malicious pranks, but a T-shirt reading "Class of 2011" is not malicious, it's a simple statement of fact. If you're going to start banning facts from school, you might as well burn the encyclopedias, since they might incite kids to riot.

But maybe we're being too hard on principal Ken Jenks. It could be that he simply did not understand that the Class of 2011 is next year's graduating class.

Principal Jenks, and the fiendish mathematical equation beyond his comprehension.

Mr. Jenks (calling him "Principal Jenks" reminds us that someone who can't handle plus-one addition is in charge of a school) generously stated that he wouldn't be suspending any of the students. Still no word on whether the encyclopedias will be allowed to remain in the library.

That's downright immaculate compared to the Shakespeare I used to pull in High School. Of course, I wasn't allowed to participate in my graduation either.

I have changed the title to reflect that this is, in fact, the most harmless school prank ever.

I was once banned from my high school, because I was working there every day for the year after I graduated, helping to make costumes for the four theater productions we had. The Vice Principal told me that it was unreasonable for me, an alum, to come every day. I explained that the school was paying me to be there, and she got so upset at my "back talk" that she banned me. I managed to convince the HR office to transfer my contract to the Administration Office, specifically the Vice Principal's budget, so that she would be paying me instead of the theater department. I don't think she ever noticed because I continued to be paid as if I was working 8 hours every day for the rest of the school year.

Sorry, that was kind of long. My point is that from my experience, I can assume that high school administrators are not very intelligent or logical.

I think it would be more appropriate to call him Principal Mr. Jerk(s) and question where he got his degree from because I wonder why it is he can not seem to add. What is the big deal if the students changed the T-Shirts. Make them fix them! Duh! You make the consequence appropriate to the behavior. This guy must have had like a Hitler for a dad and a mother like the woman from the book called "Flowers in the Attic" or something because he seems like a real control freak.

First comes encyclopedias, then the bibles. Facts must be accessible!
