Probably the most patient prank short of writing "You Suck" on the last page of War and Peace was sprung in the University of Washington in 2007. If you think it takes a long time waiting for your co-worker to come back from vacation to discover his foil-wrapped cubicle, this prank took almost three decades for the payoff. For many of our readers, this prank took longer than you did to happen.
The University's Department of Communications sealed away a time capsule in 1957, building it into the wall of the department and sealing it with 36 non-standard bolts, filling it with nifty nostalgiac items like "recent newspapers" and "pictures of people with crew cuts." But when it was opened half a century later, they found it had been upgraded with prank items like "pornographic magazines" and "used underwear."

He who laughs last is thirty years late
Judging from the vintage of the pornography, the pranksters appear to have added the items during the early 1980's. Knowing they'd have time to not only get away, but have a successful career and maybe grandkids before they were discovered, these pranksters were professionals: they added only humor (including an unused condom), took care not to damage any of the original contents, and expertly resealed the capsule so that no one was the wiser. And considering the capsule was in a main thoroughfare of the department and passed by basically everyone every day, that's very well done.
Even better was the staff reaction: they loved it. Department Chair Gerald Baldasty expressed only admiration for the antique pranksters, and revealed the exhibition of the capsule's contents planned for that weekend would proudly include the unexpected additions. After all, they've been sent forward in time, so that we might marvel at anachronisms like 80's hair (and for that matter, pubic hair).

Other educational authorities could learn a lot from this man. How to smile, for one thing.
So the next time you're impatiently waiting for a new release or for a friend to finish something, think of the unknown pranksters. They pulled the best stunt of their life, knowing they'd be old before anyone ever enjoyed it.

Inspired by this prank, I'm going to rent a safe deposit box today and deposit a fresh fish in it. Won't the bankers of the immediate future be surprised!

This makes me want to bury a time capsule with an I.O.U. in it.
