The Ultimate Guide to Foiling

Wrapping someone's office in aluminum foil (or "foiling" as it's known in the prank business) is a simple affair: wait until your co-worker has left for a few hours, wrap everything in his office or cubicle in aluminum foil, then be careful not to put the cubicle in the microwave.

First, you'll need to calculate how much foil you'll need. You can do some quick math on the height and width of each wall, as well as the floor (optional). Take this number of square feet and multiply by 1.3 to 1.5, depending on how much additional crap you have to wrap.

Go to a mass mart retailer to get your foil, if possible. Currently a 750 sq. ft. box of foil costs just over $20 at Costco, more than enough for most cubicles. Don't forget the tape! You'll need lots and lots of tape to hold down large strips of foil -- but if you're doing this in the office, it's free.

Bonus: after this prank, you'll be able to wrap plenty of leftover ham.

Be sure to get pictures. The prank will only last a few hours, but the pictures will last forever. Be sure to get your co-worker's reaction when he/she discovers his space-age makeover. Post the photos on ZUG.com and publicize them heavily. The pictures are the most important part of the prank!

Here's every foil prank picture known to man, with comments and tips to make your foil prank shine.

The problem with wrapping everything is that the pictures sometimes lose perspective. For this reason, you may not wish to wrap the floor.

Don't forget to take photos as the prank is in progress. Just be sure not to BE in any of the photos.

Proper lighting is essential for the final photo, or it will look like the world's shiniest cave.

Nothing wrong with foiling their vehicle, while you're at it.

It's difficult to foil an open table-style desk. A better choice might have been to turn the table into a snack bar, or an autopsy table.

It's equally difficult to wrap a very large office space. Here the wrapped pictures look awkward against the unwrapped walls and floor.

To wrap or not to wrap the computer screen is a controversial subject. We suggest letting the display screen peek through, so they can work when they come back...

...allowing photos like this.

A decorative basket of foil balls, or foil flowers, is a nice touch.

Cubicles are easier to wrap, simply because they require less foil. You can usually wrap an entire cube with 300 square feet of foil.

When you foil this type of cube, be sure you take a picture of the neighboring cubes, to highlight the difference. Also note the foil-covered jacket on the back of the chair.

You can also foil someone's desk at home, or in their dorm room...

...as well as their bed.

Leaving a few items on top of the foil, like a desk calendar and Post-It Notes, adds visual interest.

This dude had his entire apartment foiled by a group of "friends."

Either foil the entire floor, or don't foil it at all. Also, note the shoddy wrapping job on the items beneath the desk. A good foiling should have smooth, tight wrapping around all objects, so you can make out their shapes.

Don't be afraid of using too much foil. Here the sofa could have benefited from an additional horizontal layer.

Alternately, you can use a layer of Saran Wrap to be sure the foil is tightly sealed, and the furniture stays fresh.

And by all means, if they have a messy room, be sure to wrap each piece of trash, then leave it exactly where you found it.

I tend to avoid foil, since for some reason I can't go within two feet of the box without slicing my hand on the foil cutter.
