Planting things on top of buildings is a college classic, but the joke is usually choosing things that couldn't possibly get there on their own. This year the pranksters at MIT chose something that could get anywhere, and it was still awesome.
This would have happened more often, but the TARDIS spent 90% of its history in stone quarries
Freshmen were faced with the time-traveling TARDIS, Doctor Who's vehicle of choice, perfectly perched over MIT's Rogers building -- where (among other things) you'll find the Information Center and the Rohsenhow Heat and Mass Transfer Laboratory.
The Doctor remembers when you people really did use V's like that.
The police box was advertised as "Free for Hackers" (MIT slang for pranksters), and formed a vital part of new student orientation. The information packs might tell freshmen about their schedules, but the time machine reminds them to have fun.
