Meat is Murder!
A comedy conversation

Which means I might have to start being a murderer again after thirteen years.
Bleah.
I went to give blood this weekend and was told "We don't want your stinkin' broccoli-scented blood, damn you!"
Well, maybe it wasn't quite like that, but the latest is that I am anemic.
I was surprised, as I haven't noticed being tired or feeling weak, and I do quite a bit of sports and outdoor activities without getting wiped out.
But I have been suffering from sleeplessness as well as a few of the other lesser-known anemia symptoms for a long time.
I'm sure working 60+ hours a week isn't helping my overall health situation, but I'm not so stubborn that I can't deny that being a vegetarian for so long may just be the cause of said condition.
I figured you tissue-gnashing revelers in misfortune here at GAB would get a kick out of this.
In any case, I'm going to talk to my nutritionist, and get some tests done to determine if this is conditional from recent events, or a long-term development. If it's long-term, I can keep choking down multivitamin horse pills that don't seem to be doing a damned bit of good, or give in and get my iron and B-vitamins from a source which will ensure I can give blood by the bucket.
Thoughts and subscriptions to the Steak of the Month Club gratefully accepted.

I have to say, Therlin, that if I do (and that is IF I do) start eating meat again, I am NOT eating Shakespeare like Quarter Pounders. Nuh uh.
I will find out the minimum amount of lean red meat I have to consume, and I'll buy high-quality steaks.
No hamburgs or other fat-sodium heart-attack bombs for me.

Oh, nutritionally equivalent. No, not really. Lean red meat has the highest amount of B-vits as well as iron, and some of the components in red meat assists in the absorption of said vitamins and minerals.
Which, I suspect, is my problem.
Cheese is a heart-attack bomb, but it's not like I eat a wheel a day or anything :)

Now I eat no fat cheese.

Well then, welcome back to Meatland, I'll be your host, Ford Prefect. Can I interest you in a prime ribeye steak broiled in butter? It has less fat per ounce than any cheese, and boy does it taste better, and better for you too, look at all these b-vitamins and iron! I recommend the house Cabernet Souvignon.

Well. there are ways to keep all your nutrients up without eating meat if that's your concern, but they're generally considered less pleasant.
But whatever you do, do not order meat from a fast food place. Even if you can stomach it and don't mind supporting such annoying businesses, it'll open you up to a vast new world of gastrointestinal houseguests.

Thanks, Nutty. I'll let you know if we should fire up the grill.
I'm going to explore my options. But to be honest, if my vegetarian choices have been slowly leaching the iron from my body for the last decade and my taxed liver is finally exhausted of all its iron stores, it's just plain stupid to make myself more self-righteously anemic because that would lead to medications, and medications are worse than eating meat as far as animal welfare is concerned, in my opinion.
Now how's that for a run-on sentence?
Eh?

If it makes you feel better, you can scavenge for carrion. If you get it early, it can be cooked into a relatively healthy state, provided you don't mind getting a few cooked grubs in there too.

"that would lead to medications, and medications are worse than eating meat as far as animal welfare is concerned"
So when deciding what is bad for animals you don't take into account the benifits for humans?
I don't want to get into a political discussion on this, I'm just curious. I take issue with the Mary Kay company feeding lipstick to bunny rabbits but if the death of 1000 rats can save one human life, I'm all for it.

Nutty, I am very hard pressed to protest medical research on animals. But if I personally can avoid having to take medications, I'll do it.
Does that make sense? It's sort of a weird topic, because there is no be-all end-all right and wrong. I consider it all personal preference, whether morally or medically influenced, as such "To each his own".

The thing about iron is that the body doesn't absorb it well in tablet form. (For me, personally, if I take vitamins with any iron in them at all, I am constipated for weeks. Just thought I'd share.)
The best way to absorb iron is to eat an iron-rich food in combination with a vitamin C-rich food. (No, this isn't dodgy "food-combining"; vitamin C actually is a catalyst for iron absorption.)
On this page, I found the following helpful chart:
VEGETARIAN SOURCES OF IRON
FOOD ** PORTION SIZE ** IRON (mg)
beet greens, cooked ** 1/2 cup ** 1.4
bulgur, cooked ** 1 cup ** 1.8
blackstrap molasses ** 1 Tablespoon ** 3.5
figs, dried ** 5 ** 2.1
kidney beans, cooked ** 1 cup ** 5.2
lentils, cooked ** 1 cup ** 6.6
lima beans, cooked ** 1 cup ** 4.5
prune juice ** 8 ounces ** 3.0
spinach, cooked ** 1/2 cup ** 3.2
Swiss chard, cooked ** 1/2 cup ** 2.0

I know, I know, I know.
I've been a vegetarian for thirteen years, I am not a stranger to nutritional needs and how to fulfill them.
The fact of the matter is, I'm not cutting it, apparently. Something's not working the way it should. Perhaps vegetarianism isn't for me.
The only symptoms of anemia I've been experiencing are insomnia, then a lot of trouble waking up once I get to sleep, ringing in the ears, paleness, and occasional heart palpitations.
The funny/scary thing is that these symptoms have been going on for so long that I just figured they were the way I am.
I plan to continue eating whole, raw foods and staying generally healthy. Hopefully some supplement will work.

Aushie, darling...
If you're going to quote a source, you should link it.
I just read that it might be the fact that I drink tea or coffee with just about every meal. Maybe I'll try cutting that out, too.
Soon there will be nothing left but a tiny green sprout where I used to be.

I have volunteered at our local hospital's nursery for the past 10 years, I have actually even seen the difference in the general health and well-being of babies born to vegetarians vs. non-vegetarians. It is no coincidence that babies born to vegetarians are generally lower in birthweight, and they have a harder time getting through the normal jaundice period, requiring more time under sunlamps and needing to be supplemented with formula, even if breastfeeding, to get their livers to start processing nutrients properly.

Everyone knows that God hates vegetarians. Hell, I'm an atheist and I still acknowledge this. I'm only kidding... although I did have a vegan teacher in high school who started eating meat again after about thirty years or so because her doctor told her she was pretty much going to die soon. She was so scary looking- scrawny, bony, wrinkly, and her hair was so brittle and sparse, she looked like some sort of refugee. Not that vegetarians are unhealthy, but this woman was a vegan who was even picky about eating beans and such.
