Religion - supposed to be good for you, but pick the wrong one and you will find yourself burning at the stake, selling everything you own to give to the aliens, or walking into a synagogue with tnt strapped to your chest.

1. The international space station - useless expensive piece of space junk that has so far produced 0 valuable research projects.
2. Marijuana laws - Purely a political move by paper companies.
3. George Bush - do I really have to add to that?
4. The space shuttle program - supposed to be a cheap, safe method of moving things into orbit. Turned out to be an incredibly dangerous and expensive method. The whole shuttle program should be considered a failure.
5. Corn Ethanol - Subsidizing a food crop that isn't economically viable, and then not even using it to feed people.
6. Mother Theresa - Miserable hypocritical Carroll. Provided no significant medical care or assistance other than places for the sick to be made slightly more comfortable while waiting to die. Sucked up to ruthless dictators, endorsed the plans of involuntary sterilization of the poor by the Indian government. Millions in donations to her causes went completely unaccounted for. Of course, when she herself died, it was in a modern hospital receiving the best care possible.
7. Atkins diet - Good news, you will loose weight. Bad news, much higher than average rebound effect plus ruins your heart and liver.
8. Jenny McCarthy - Vaccines don't cause autism any more than dumb blonde twats provide solid medical advice.

I hope you're just having a bad day and blindly complaining about stuff, because nobody can be that wrong on purpose.
I'm not going to waste time linking to wiki's, but I can tell you that the International Space Station, aided with the Space Shuttle, has run countless scientific experiments and long term research projects. Most people never read or hear about them unless they're a hardcore geek because they involve stuff like combustion in a microgravity environment or figuring out how to monitor water toxicity in space flight. This stuff might be boring, but it is essential knowledge that the next generation will need in order to further explore the solar system.
It's kind of like running some experiments to see if the Lewis and Clark Expedition can survive instead of just crossing your fingers. The results of numerous experiments and tests performed aboard the ISS and the Shuttle are leading to a conclusion that the human body can not withstand the 6 month zero gravity journey to Mars. Costly? Yes. Zero valuable research projects? Considered a failure? That's not even worthy of discussion.

But getting back on subject, Elizabeth Taylor.
Yah, yah, yah. She made National Velvet and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
But in other movies she also made dog after dog and destroyed man after man who thought it might be a good idea to marry a starlet.
Richard Burton never got the credit he deserved.

Well Manhole, I will have to revise slightly. I should have said the ISS has not performed a single valuable piece of researched that couldn't have been done just as well at a much lower cost and risk using unmanned satellites instead of trying to create a semi-permanent habitat for human beings in a Frost-ing vacuum. As far as hardcore geeks, it was Richard Feynman, one of the greatest physicists of his generation, that first pronounced the space shuttle program a flop, many, many years ago. He only invented quantum electrodynamics and won a Nobel prize, but if he doesn't fit the bill maybe Bob Park is geeky enough for you, seeing as he was the head of the American Physical Society and a major critic of both programs.
It's the scientific community who have been screaming for the government to dismantle these programs. They're better for public relations than actual science. I'd love to see man walk on Mars, but so far we haven't even figured out a way for a human to survive even a fraction of the trip, since once outside the earth's magnetic field and atmosphere cosmic rays and ionizing solar radiation tend to shoot through the body and shred DNA strands into protein soup.
No offense, I respect and share your passion for the topic, but the fact is the shuttle program was a disaster in a political wrapper. It probably set space exploration back by at least a decade if not more, and the international space station is a joke.

It may not be romantic, but this is the age of unmanned space exploration. Walking on another planet is something our great grandchildren might one day accomplish, but only if we focus our efforts now on developing the science and technologies that will make that possible. Sorry, but we aren't going to live to see it, though I would be ecstatically happy if I turned out to be wrong on the topic.
The deep space climate observatory, an incredibly useful instrument that was intended for placement at the lagrange 1 point to collect data on how much of the Suns energy was absorbed or reflected by the earth, was stuck in a warehouse because funds were diverted to the ISS.
Now the mars rover, the earlier one that cost under a million to build and used modified automotive airbags as a cheap, effective way to land safely, then exceeded it's expected lifetime something like 6 times over while returning tons of data, take samples - that was some good Frost-ing science.

Yeah, I'm having a day. Worked my ass off and felt like I accomplished nothing. But since I am a bastard I will point out that we already knew several dozen reasons man couldn't survive the trip to mars, before they ever launched the ISS. So they spent billions to perform experiments to verify what we already knew.
Well, at least our government is consistent.
Manhole, i may disagree with you, but I really do share the passion for scientific exploration. I could go on a long tirade about how we ignore the heroes who spend their lives doing the thankless research that allows the bulk of our lazy, worthless species to slowly crawl forward, while we still celebrate people who can hit things the farthest with sticks. You just invoked my nerd-rage when you suggested my disagreement with you equated to scientific illiteracy.
I guess what I really mean is, Frost us, we all suck.

Actually, speaking as someone who's been living in the city she was trying to help, I have to agree. She really did nothing of value to help improve people's lives; she only helped them die. If you want to ever donate money or time to a good cause, Calcutta Rescue is the one you should choose. I've volunteered over there a couple times and it's amazing how much they actually do to help people before they die.

I'm with Akimbo on this one.
The only reason people have such a boner for space right now is because we know we'll need something to fall back on when the concequences of humans shoving their collective dicks in every single one of the earth's orifices (and then drilling more orifices when there are none left) for the last hundred years catch up with us.
This planet is like an ex who used to be hot before the meth and prostitution started.

Just to be clear, no one can prove a thing about me giving drugs to planets or other celestial bodies.

Chickens.
He thinks Elizabeth Taylor is bad and Mother Theresa is good.
Hello? Father of the Bride? A Place in the Sun? Suddenly, Last Summer? Butterfield 8? Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Reflections in a Golden Eye? GIANT????? And come on - who else could have played Fred Flintstone's mother-in-law, Pearl Slaghoople, other than La Liz? You suck.
And yes, it's been pretty well established that Mother Theresa was a failure at best and quite possibly a fraud.

Insert smuggling drugs in uranus joke here
I'm too tired to come up with one, but I'm sure it's workable.
