My upcoming trip to France reminds me of this little story that happened to me the last time I went there. I needed to rent a car during my trip to France two years ago. When I arrived at the desk where I had made a reservation, I was asked to fill out the usual form. I gave my name and my address in Canada, but decided to pay with the French bank account that I still have, to avoid unnecessary currency exchange fees.
Back in Canada, a few weeks later, I received my bank statement. I noticed that the rental company had charged me in Canadian dollars instead of Euros, based on the fact that I lived in Canada, even though the rental itself had a price in Euros, and the credit card I paid with was attached to an account in Euros. Of course, they charged me a generous fee for the currency exchange. My bank, in turn, converted the amount in Canadian dollars back to Euros, before charging it to my account, adding their own exchange fee in the process.
All in all, I ended up paying 17 Euros in currency exchange fees, to convert Euros into Euros.
I might rent a car again this year while I'm there. Anybody need a floor mat, or a spare tire?

Money well spent?
That $400 I spent in high school so no one would call me "Daddy".

Money well spent?
Well, every penny I spent in the Phillipines towards making sure that when I expire, St. Peter meets me at the pearly gates and beats my ass like I just insulted his mother.
