Oh-Oh-No Outgoing Otto
Fox recently premiered a new sitcom called "That 80's Show," which builds on the success of its hit sitcom "That 70's Show," and will be cancelled by the time you read this. As I watched it, I wondered how long it would be before we'd have enough perspective to enjoy "That 90's Show." Then I thought: why stop there?

I fired off this prank e-mail to Carsey-Werner-Mandabach, the company that produces "That 70's Show" and "That 80's Show." The only e-mail address I could find on their site was for job inquiries, so I had to pitch my idea as an idiot seeking a development deal. Which, I suppose, is not that far from reality.

Dear Carsey-Werner-Mandelbrot:

I have been enjoying your hit sitcoms, THAT 70'S SHOW and THAT 80'S SHOW. Yesterday while smoking pot in the shower, I had an idea. Why not skip THAT 90'S SHOW and go straight to THAT 00'S SHOW?

THAT 00'S SHOW (pronounced "oh-ohs show") would focus on events and trends that have not yet occurred. Set in future American hotspot Boise, Idaho, the show will be about a group of twenty-somethings who laugh, love, and learn together. THAT 00'S SHOW will lampoon the excesses and trends of this decade, though they have not yet occurred. What fun!

The plot is pretty formulaic, like your other ones -- there's an Everyguy who falls in love with some woman, but they don't know if they like each other, whatever. I don't really care about that part. I just want to tell you about the robot squirrels.

In 2005, I predict robot squirrels will become an enormous fad, similar to the Hula Hoop or Pet Rock. Every child in America will want to own several dozen of these playful metallic creatures. So whenever you need a laugh, you just throw in a few robot squirrels, and everybody yells, "ROBOT SQUIRRELS!"

The genius of THAT 00'S SHOW is that, if you play your cards right, you can actually coin the catchphrases of tomorrow, thus making a kind of self-fulfilling future. Some of the phrases I have in mind are "SWEET GOD, IT'S SO JUICY," "WHO CUT THE CHEESE?!" and of course "ROBOT SQUIRRELS!!"

I would like you guys to hire me to begin development of THAT 00'S SHOW at once, as I am currently working a dead-end retail job (Best Buy), and I need to get out of there before I kill somebody. I'm coming out to New York on Monday, and will be stopping by if that's OK.

Sincerely,
Jim Ohn-Hargrave

I never got a response. Maybe that's because they're located in California.
