For almost 100 years, the New Wilmington Missionary Conference has been held during the first week of August on the campus of Westminster College in Pennsylvania. Though the name "Missionary Conference" conjures up images of fat women wearing beads and talking about their trips to Africa, that's only a part of the experience. Many of the women wear shawls.
NWMC is a week-long conference put on by the Presbyterian Church. It's kind of like a church camp, and it's kind of like a spiritual retreat. The majority of those who attend are in high school, though many folks from all ages show up.
I've attended off and on since I was a teenager. Many of the seminal events of my life have taken place there: my first kiss, my first time sent to jail, and spiritual awakenings too numerous to mention.
Here's what happened this year.
